So I've been recently trying to get myself into reading some sort of book again. Since I'm still burnt out on regular old text novels from when I was an English major, I decided to give graphic novels a go and they've been a hell of a good read.

So far I've gone through both Persepolis books by Marjane Satrapi, A Drifter's Life by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, and just today 300 by Frank Miller.

On my current next-up list is The Adventures of Unemployed Man by Erich Origen and Gan Golan, and A Contract with God by Will Eisner.

I do own a few others that I'm going to get back to reading, such as Watchmen, Maus, and Jimmy Corrigan, but for the most part I'm pretty much dumb on what's really out there. Any suggestions?

I would recommend Joe Sacco's work. Also check out Habibi and Blankets by Craig Thompson.

I enjoy graphic novels a lot myself, but I try my best to stay away from the superhero stuff.

I have very few graphic novels in my possession, but among my favorite are:
Bone by Jeff Smith
Batman: Hush

These vary in length, material sensitivity, pricing, and genre, and I love them all dearly.
#2 is my inspiration for a graphic novel I'm working on writing with my cousin.

Seconding Bone! It's got a really cool aesthetic that keeps drifting between American-ish frontier, high fantasy, and some really weird stuff often involving monks and dragons.

I'm a big fan of Logicomix, the story of Bertrand Russell and his whole field, trying to get an ironclad logical basis for all of math, failing but laying the basics for modern computing.

Also, The Less-Than-Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, a complete, professional-quality webcomic about some boys on a road trip.

The Crow by James O'Barr is worth a look.
