The thread title says it all.

Another stupid idea it came up on my mind this morning. For the very same reason I did the other polls (read: "Why not?"), here is a thread which could have been a poll but it isn't.

Personally, it's a par between Castellar and the Terminal font. Legend says I was going to use Terminal as font in my layout, but due to problems with font size not showing Fixedsys made the cut. :/

So, what's your favourite font? Comic Sans shall not be tolerated.

Either Calibri or Tahoma. I believe that my layout font is set to Tahoma, but for stuff I do in Word or whatever, I set it to Calibri.

Ashcan BB for lettering comics/annotating art. DejaVu Sans Mono as terminal font. For other uses I tend to pick something from the DejaVu family as well. They are included in Ubuntu and OpenOffice by default, and they just grew on me.

I've been wanting to make a font of my own for years now, but I was too lazy to actually do it.

I've rather liked Comic Sans for a while, I was rather surprised when I found that most of the internet seemingly hates it... Otherwise, my favorite font would probably the Tohunga/Matoran font, followed by the TRON font ^.^'

I love fonts. They have so many awesome uses. But asking a designer-type-person to pick a font is like asking a painter to pick a favorite color.

Well, there are totes fonts I dislike¹ and then there are fonts I enjoy a lot² but with the latter I think it really comes in waves. But so does the former. Like, right now I’m having this crazy obsession with late ’90s corporate UI design, not because I think it’s necessarily “good” or “pretty” but I think it has a symbolic significance³ and consequentially I’ve been enjoying fonts from the pre-ClearType era.

But if I’m really to pick a single font really fast and suddenly, I’d say Frutiger, Adrian Frutiger’s Swiss highway font. I mean, it’s like super-influential right now with all these derivatives out there⁴ and I secretly hope it sweeps through and becomes the new Helvetica⁵.



An annotated list of other fonts I enjoy:
  • Univers – A groovy airport font that pioneered the Frutiger numbering system.

  • Lucida Grande – Probably my favorite UI font ever designed. It gives Mac OS this character that contrasts the stark, corporate, utilitarian feel of Window’s Tahoma⁶.

  • Chicago – To me, this bitmap font recalls the old Mac days, back when all fonts were named after cities⁷. I think this kind of has to do with my recent bitmap obsession. I bought a black and white iPod G4 Clickwheel for the purpose of having my MP3 player typefaced in this.

  • Futura – A favorite of Stanley Kubrick, among others. My favorite font to use when I want to channel early Wes Anderson.

  • Akzidenz-Grotesk – How can you possibly hate this font?

³ I can’t remember if I ever made a post about this but basically aesthetically, not unlike how the B-movies of the ’70s/’80s “lovingly” recalled images of ’50s-era existential sci-fi horror, we are going to be channeling late ’90s iconography converting the feelings of fear and paranoia into, like, ones of nostalgia. The baby Internet era is essentially becoming “retro” and “cool”.
⁴ The mid-/late 2000s saw tons of Frutiger derivatives, such as Podium Sans, which was the UI Font of the iPod Video and other portable Apple products before they switched to Helvetica Neue Bold; Adobe’s Myriad Pro; and Windows’s Segoe UI, the latter of which resulted in a court case over alleged plagiarism.
⁵ fat chance but perhaps for the better? I’m not sure if it can withstand widespread satiation the way Helvetica does.
⁶ But when I say Tahoma, I really mean a homely hodgepodge of Arial, Microsoft Sans Serif, MS Sans Serif and Tahoma. Yum!
⁷ Shoutout to San Francisco, Geneva and Monaco! Especially the bitmap versions! All y’all be cool.

It is not: your quotation marks don't match properly which breaks the td tag, and you shouldn't use quotation marks around a single-word font name anyways. It should be font-family:Tahoma,sans-serif; or similar.

Fixed that, which resulted in my post completely disappearing, so I've probably left a tag unclosed or something. Happily, it's not board-breaking and I now prefer whatever the default font is to Tahoma, so I'm just gonna leave it as it was. Ugly code, but it was written by about 3 different people helping me. If I were to do it right, I'd likely use an external CSS file. Obviously stored somewhere that's stable.

Sarcasm aside, I don't really care for fonts in general, I just used what is available and what works. More often than not when writing an essay or report we are forced to use a certain font so in that matter it does not matter that much.

For my layout I tried and get a font that looked at least somewhat like the text in pokemon ruby and sapphire. :v

As you may have guessed already, my favorite font is Arial. It's not the prettiest, since it was designed to be highly readable on small computer screens, but that makes it practical, which is all I need. It's the font I've used for almost any drawing I've made, including KvSG.

I'm also a fan of Courier/New, and if it counts, the custom font used by Super Mario games. In fact, my Trillian font is set to pmdialog, a recreation of the font from Paper Mario.

I'm pretty sure this applies to Wingdings and Webdings as well, and also why no new ones are created anymore.

Also, I recently used the open font "Jura" on a website I was designing (blah blah blah ...The Jura family has an unfortunate name clash with Ed Merritt's Jura serif font,

Aside from Arial, I also like Times New Roman. Sure, it's probably the most vanilla font in the world. However, it is a good font for reading anything.

Yeah you're right.
They were created to have a common set of icons for applications to use.

From Windows 95 MARLETT.TTF also contains some "system" icons, like the system controls.

But don't get me started on that font...

Favorite fonts? Well...

As a UI font, I prefer the bitmap "Helvetica" font (I don't know if it has any relationship to the actual Helvetica, it's just named that way in the xfonts pack). Mostly because it looks crisp and nice on my screen.

In the console, my choice is split between Terminus and the EGA (DOS 8x14) font -- which I made my own version of that covers most popular codepages and includes lots of extra symbols.

Get the EGA font (BDF -- Linux only ☹).

I also make my own bitmap fonts from time to time -- sometimes "fixed" clones of fonts from old video games, sometimes completely original ones. (In some cases, the entire lower case has to be remade just so that it'd look in the same style.)
