The last few days the end of Winamp was on the news. Everyone blamed AOL for pulling the rug under them.

And then?

Apparently Microsoft wants to buy Winamp from AOL.

People are out both crying Winamp will be really RUINED FOREVER, and others are saying they are happy it will finally replace WMP, and even others are saying this will boost their image.

What I think about this?

Hope they don't kill it off!... Or make some potentially unwanted changes to the program.

Considering the past record... we'll see. I'm downloading the "final" Winamp version just in case something goes wrong.

What do you think of this?

I think the llama whipped Winamp’s ass a long time ago back when everyone ran off to foobar2000 and iTunes. Besides, if I’m really feeling the Winamp nostalgia blues and don’t have access to Winamp anymore, I’ll just load up Audacious or something. I’m not really concerned.

Yep, Winamp lost his primate back in 2003.

But still, I'm pretty curious how would MS handle Winamp...

I'll download the final version of Winamp. But, I may also try to download as much of that site as I can before it shuts down completely.

It's a cool piece of software, with many great plug-ins out there. However, I also haven't used it much myself outside of listening to game music.

As for Microsoft acquiring it, I'm curious if they'll keep all the features Winamp was known for. I would strongly support it, but I'd also like to hear the developers' perspective of all of this.

ADDENDUM:
I also downloaded Winamp 0.71 for the Mac, but good luck finding that today as it is nearly impossible to find as that was a really early alpha.

They were smart enough to restrict access to the customize and component (where plug-ins and skins are) folder, but not the rest of it.

END RESULT:
Here is a list of helpful links where to download ALL the plugins on Winamp's webite:

Welp, I shouldn't do this (the robots.txt explicitly says about this), but with Winamp death this can get critical (I fear that everything might disappear).
The fact that the Wayback Machine will never touch this site (thank you robots.txt) doesn't help matters.

NOTE: I limited the download speed to 300Kbs. (The max connection I can get is 400Kbs anyway)

Hopefully they won't shut the whole web site down. Otherwise we'd lose a nice source of Audacious/QMMP skins. ☹

That's why I'm downloading the entire collection of skins from the site.

This is my biggest fear, although take a look what their robots.txt says...

Although the (potential?) death of WinAmp does not directly affect me (I never used WinAmp), it still saddens me to see this old but reliable music player software to die out. I have been using XMPlay as my primary music player since 2009. The (potential) loss of the plugins and visualization will indirectly affect me, since XMPlay can use WinAmp visualizations via a wrapper, and can also use some of the simpler WinAmp plugins.

R.I.P WinAmp .

I was about to complete the download of the whole skin/plugin collection...

Then I found out the hard way WinHTTRack imploded and only felt like downloading part of the collection.

Or it may be the restrictions of the Winamp's server kicking in.

I love Winamp. I really can't remember what I used before it; it's been that long. Time to save the installer somewhere permenant.

Okay, the hard part's over... Now I need to upload it on my MEGA Account... which will be even harder - I don't have enough time in a month for that. Not that there are any time limits now.

Heh, nice.

This also means I don't have to download the whole plugin collection anymore (it always locked up at some point in any of my attempts anyway ).

Apparently, the new owners of WinAmp completely reworked the website. The skin/plugin collection is gone

But, apparently, there's a nice third-party collection of plug-ins and skins here.

These are still up for the moment. Grab the plugins and skins before they disappear!

I'm surprised the download.nullsoft.com site is still up. It may go down in any moment although.

I really hate the new WinAmp's site.

Also, WinAmp 2.x is still placed along with any CD that me and my dad make that has more than 80 minutes of music (for playback on a PC) just for support for archaic piles of crap.

The new WinAmp site looks awfully a lot like something out of Windows 8.

That's a bad thing, but at least:

http://download.nullsoft.com/winamp

This is still up.

Winamp died when 3.0 came out, and was cremated when AOL bought it.

counterpoint: Winamp 5 is better than Winamp 2 solely because of the media library/built-in portable media player support and having a default skin that wasn't designed in 1998 for 640x480 screens

Apparently Archive.org had a complete backup of the skins folder for a while.

Also, some people made complete mirrors of the website too.

Works for me. The last one also includes various Winamp 5 distributions.
