I'm rather surprised there isn't a topic about this at this point. Apparently, the government is shutting down several of its services.

Something from CNN about this mess.

I heard bits about it from BBC News, but didn't realize it was actually happening now. I kinda like to imagine it being like all the lights in the building start going out with a big ol' "White House is now shutting down." pop-up displaying in front of the building.

I don't normally like take sides on stuff like this, but there's pretty much only one group responsible for this happening, and they're proud of it. As proud as that one kid that gets the whole class field trip cancelled out of spite because the teacher didn't pick his favorite place.

And before my own eyes, boom goes a good part of the government.

I can only hope Congress comes up with some sort of resolution to this.

I wake up from a nightmare and the first thing I hear is this shit.

On one hand I'm kinda glad someone I follow on Tumblr is pointing out how hypocritical some people who claim to follow Jesus's teachings are. (Basically don't be a dick to the poor)

It's like how can this political party be okay with stripping the poor and minorities in this nation of its rights to live then turn around and pray to Jesus in a church?!

At least by the standards of one GOP speaker, one can read the Bible and proclaim that cutting aid to the poor is supported by the Bible.

Also, I love how Google's logo for today is of the Yosemite National Park, which is shut down because it's government-run.

Hah, and here I thought politics over here kinda suck. Voting in the US sounds like choosing between a rock and a hard place, with one party blocking the other and such shit...

Or, really, how can a (de facto) two-party system even work? Honest question; do Democrats and Republicans ever find actual consensus? Like without screwing everyone and everything over in the process? Maybe it's because I really don't know a lot about US politics, but some of the stuff I, as an "outsider", hear about them sounds so fucking ridiculous, it's hard to believe it's an actual, real political system - and that of one of the world's most, I guess, prominent and important countries to boot.

Think of it this way:
-Republicans tend to want to pass laws that benefit a select few or everyone for the short term that then screws things up over the long term. Likes lower taxes, but then to afford government stuff will try and cut social programs such as Medicare, Social Security, etc. Tends to jabber on about how they're not Big Government, even though they make campaign money through deals with businesses, effectively attempting to buy their way into office. Mainly appeals voters in states that are very rural or very religious. They will earn most of the states, but as nearly all of them are worth so little will try to persuade swing states to vote red. Will often refuse to budge on issues until their compromises are satisfied.

-Democrats want to pass laws that benefit everyone and fund government programs and agencies in order to do that. Their laws tend to suck at first but are actually pretty noble in the long run. Up front, APA in a pain in the ass, but its goals intend to help Americans. Has some history of corruption, and can get too liberal at times, but given how the GOP has been acting nowadays, they look completely sane. More able to compromise with bills and laws, but said bills suffer as a result. Appeals to voters in more populous states, particularly those with big cities, and thus while earning less states in the electoral college they are worth a lot more.

The only consensus these parties find? Internet and piracy laws!

Fixed that for you.

The only way I can see to fix the system is to eliminate the possibility of corruption. Audit politicians and people in powerful positions heavily and make it illegal for them to make any money in any way other than their paycheck. Then move on to dealing with the loopholes that let them just boost their own paycheck. It may not be fair to some, it may make a lot fewer people want to run for office, but at least you know those that do will be doing it because they actually give a shit and not just because they plan to exploit their power to make millions at everyone else's expense.

Most people, probably even within America, can come close to describe how bizarre our political system is. Take this video, for instance, on our voting system, as well as this one documenting the problems of the electoral college. Part of the reason is because of how big we are and how old some of the laws U.S. abides by is.

There's no real independent representation to speak of, as there are only two big parties - the Democrats and the Republicans. Because almost everyone voting will choose from either of those two, the votes for smaller parties (like the Green Party or the Constitution Party) have no real effect.

SOPA/PIPA/STOPA/ACTA/CISPA/OBAMA (Organizational B**tards Against Middle-class America)
(Okay, I made up that last one )

There should be a double-jeopardy law against attempting to enact the same bill over and over, but with a different name...

14. How will this affect me?

In ways big and small. The mail will continue to come. The military will continue to fight. And Social Security checks will continue to be paid.

But if you need a federal loan to buy a house, you'll have to wait. If you want a gun permit or a passport, that won't happen anytime soon.

If this shutdown will affect Federal Student Loans, those which have already been taken out by genius college students like myself, prior to the shutdown...

There is nothing that grind my gears than the inability to pursue an education than due to the cop out of "money" needed for tuition. Tuition payments so that the college president can go buy himself yet another Ferrari, at the expense of students who became hobos and died. Screw Obamacare; how about some College Reform?

Ah, don't get me started on college. It's still pushed as being super important, the only way your future will have any meaning, totally worth the money; and in a way, that's true - not because they give you an education (ha!) but because they sell you (for many thousands of dollars that will put you in debt for decades) a piece of paper that employers will demand you have (and also dozens of textbooks you may never even use once). It's not a place of education. It's a goddamn scam, and if you're lucky you might learn a thing or two by the time you're finished.

I don't know how anyone can think for-profit schools are at all a good idea.

If the system was set up so that needed money started coming out of every congressman's paycheck instead of shutting down the government, I bet they would be a lot more eager to negotiate properly with each other.

Considering the money they make, if you dropped their salaries down to a modest $40k/year, that right there is a little more than $71 million to keep some things afloat.

Weird ... I guess it's all down to cost of living. My parents and me felt well-off with 20k a year back in Puerto Rico. Though, they do own their house...

I hate to sound pessimistic, but it doesn't seem like the shutdown is improving.

Quite a lot has happened (such as WWII vets storming into a memorial), so I'll just link to this page of updates.
