The other day I totally rearranged everything in my living room because I realized the set-up I had made for über-awkward workflow. It was totally drab, man! I had the computer in the corner and, to use it, you'd sit with the front door, the windows and the rest of the room behind you. And since it was the corner, you'd be able to see like nothing in your peripheral vision except parts of the wall. It felt super cramped and super claustrophobic and I had trouble concentrating after a while. Also, the sofa would be across the room with the windows behind it and if it was ever hot and we opened the windows and watched a movie, the noise from outside would drown out the movie and it'd be hella annoying!

So I made it into this:



(Excuse my sparsely decorated apartment! We are only just starting to add decorations!)

The desk was now against the window and I could easily see most of the room from this angle, including the front door (which is super important) and suddenly my workstation felt way more open and welcoming and watching movies or playing video games or just working felt simply awesome.

And that was cool until I changed my desktop to a picture of city lights until I realized that the picture was too dynamic and created a lot of energy and I'd get restless so I swapped it out for a dark blue picture of mountains and also I had to be careful about the windows being open because the wind outside is pretty stimulating to but anyway it got me thinking about what makes a workstation super efficient and also what sort of configurations other people might enjoy.

So what does your desk look like? What do you like about it? Do you find yourself getting restless after using it for too long? Do you have a consistent for-sure arrangement or do you feel the need to change it constantly so it doesn't bore you?

I try to keep my desk organized but the cables are a mess and my shelf is... well, somehow more of a mess than the cables. I need to fix that one day.

My desk area (and where I eat because I still don't own a dining room table) is usually kept clean. The computer to the right is the one I use the most. The desk is fairly new, maybe a year or two.

Evidently, my phone camera is not of fantastic quality. Anyway, going from left to right, my printer which has now taken up a semi-permanent position as a shelf, my fan-obstructed computer, whose back sound jacks have shorted and only the front speaker port works, so no microphone for me. Slightly in front of that and to the right, my N64-USB adaptor, which explains the presence of the N64 controller on my desk and makes it very easy to speedrun OoT, if I can ever get PJ64 to recognise me pressing C-Down. My 1680x1050 second monitor sits in front of it displaying e-mail and IRC, alongside an Xbox 360 controller; perfect for playing Steam games or working with XNA! And finally, my main 1920x1080 primary monitor following the trend of showing Jul on screen. Above that, a poster of Link fighting Ganondorf from OoT. The wall on the right has posters of The Big Bang Theory and a schematic of the Enterprise 1701-D.

Conversely to Sofi, I like the enclosed feeling I get from my wall and my second monitor. Makes me feel very comfortable.

I updated the photo of my desk space to include my current speaker set and desktop background. I also have a laptop, an Asus U52F-BBL5, which I keep in the living room and use from my easy chair on occasion, like most would use a tablet these days. Of course, it is capable of compiling most of my software as well, so it's more useful on trips than a tablet is.

This is my University workstation.



It's a unique decorating style that I call "Jetez merde au bureau".

Also, my phone camera takes stupidly large pictures. 2560x1920. Unbelievable.

This is my current workstation arrangement at the University dorm:


Some decor


On left: Macrowave, laptop equipment and books, electronics soldering and tool equipment.
In center: Diplomas, more decor, laptop


New Printer, scanner, University-provided HDTV, and VCR/DVD Combo (functional, $5 at Goodwill, yeah!)

The accomodations are actually better and more productive here at the University than at home (noisy, distracting, mentally insane family, dirty houeshold, no actual desk with legroom at home room, etc). The other half of the dorm room is empty, where my ex-roomate, 'MrColonial" used to stay... Good.

And this is mine ... another Lenovo computer here and lots of Chinese homework. Oh and that's also a 3DS XL and a Nexus 7 tablet. A Wii is currently hooked to the TV.

Due to monitor problems, I shall now post my actual desk, where I actually do all the "work".

I said I have reorganized my desktop, not my desk. It's nice living in a messy world...

That's a laptop, not a monitor on the bottom left of the desk. You can also see two of the 4 TVs in this shot. The top left and middle monitors are hooked up to the Windows XP computer that I rarely use anymore, and the top right monitor doesn't have a stand and isn't plugged in to anything.

Also from the picture you can't see my mousepad.
