The SM64 Midi Preview Soundfont is a special MIDI soundfont specifically engineered in order to allow hackers to preview their MusicXML songs before conversion into .m64 music files (for SM64). Recommened to be used with MuseScore, the soundfont contains all of the SM64 instruments/SFX sound banks. Specific measures of the imported .midi file imported into your favorite MusicXML editor can be previewed with any of the vanilla soundbanks and instruments of SM64. The instruments in the .SF2 soundfont file are setup similar to how (I think) they are banked in the actual SM64 ROM (Presets control instruments, which are ID'd by a Bank and Instrument ID #, which get their sound from .wav samples).

The SoundFont was created with Viena (with one "n"). SM64 Instruments were copied from SubDrag's rip & from this Jul.rustedlogic topic. The video below demonstrates its use.

Special thanks to StupidMarioBros1Fan for beta testing, and to SubDrag for the sfx rips!
I hope Sm64 hackers will find this resource quite useful for .m64 music creation & previewing.

A very useful tool! I always hated it to import, go into game and listen to the music to test it. Now, I can simply listen to it, while being in MuseScore. Really, this deserves a big thanks from me.

DamiHack likes to change and recompile code and then claim stuff as his own:

Is there any difference to it? I need some enlightement here.

Greetings,
Cajetan.

The only difference I found is that the instruments are better named, the MIDI list is a lot shorter, and it actually works in SynthFont.

Meh. Tamkis can probably assimilate those changes into his build or something.

Basically what DamiHack did (without permission ) was the following on my todo list for v1.1, as quoted from my website:

TODO (v1.1):
@Make the soundfont file more efficient stucturally. (The current version has many duplicates of the same sample)
@Add and merge the Primary/Secondary instrument layers for certain instruments.
@Add meaningful titles for the instruments.
@Make a separate MIDI Soundfont for use as an actual playback soundfont (for MIDI listening)?

He did everything except bullet point #2. However, "his" soundfont is geared towards casual MIDI listening, while mine is geared towards music composition. Due to the instruments in mine being banked very similarly to how it is in SM64, mine is more for composition.

I'll assimilate these changes into a separate build, the "Casual" Midi Soundfont. Eventually...

sorry if i'm necrobumping, but the video and the link are both dead. Ironically, Damihack's stuff is still available.

Hm. I'll wait a few weeks, then probably close the thread if it's just totally offline.

Overcame previous moral/professional dilemna a few months ago of whether I should keep my ROM hacking utilities on my personal/professional portfolio website, and have decided to permanently keep this and other ROM hacking utilities, and it could only help in the job search. The DL links and video in the OP are now fixed and pointed to my newer website.

Enjoy!

Welcome back. This soundfont would be really useful for previewing songs and figuring out which instruments go perfect with the instruments in MIDIs I work with. (I mostly do SM64 custom music so this would definetly help)
Hope to see this project continue going further.
