I fell out of Pokemon games after Crystal due to feeling that the new games had silly things like beauty contests... but I'm really excited for the features in Pokemon X and Y. And I actually like the new pokemon design.

I can't wait

WELP. Someone somehow managed to receive a copy of Pokemon X a whole 10 days before release date and they're posting pictures on their instagram. Don't look if you don't like spoilers, obviously.

Edit:
Official video of the introductory sequence. I think I'm just a tiny bit gay for Professor Sycamore.

As a way to prepare for X/Y coming out this weekend, I'm speeding through White 2. I'm playing as the girl, chose the name Blaze, and named by spiky-blue-haired rival Sonic. After about two hours, I'm at the second gym, and am currently taking a break after getting my butt repeatedly kicked by Roxie. Here are my thoughts on the game:

-Definitely starts out different than all the other games. It's kinda refreshing.
-They really throw a bunch of stuff at you in the beginning. Even though I've played White Version, it's a bit overwhelming.
-Like free stuff? Here you go! Want more free stuff? Too bad! We're giving you free stuff every couple of minutes.
-The new locations are really pretty.

I only got about half-way through White, and I never delved into White 2. I was contemplating a run through before X/Y, but it's too late. I wouldn't make it in time. Instead, I've been going through Bowser's Inside Story (another RPG I haven't finished yet \o/ )

I've been getting exponentially more excited for X/Y the closer we are to launch. I can't really remember the last time I got this excited for a release.

omigosh, that video xD

Gonna be picking up my copy of X at midnight tonight... In preparation, I've completed "OWNED" in my Black Pokedex (something I've been working on since I got HeartGold) and I've also crushed the Super Trains. I'm happy that we can't transfer all them pokemans over right away, I think I'm going to enjoy sticking to and learning the pokemon of X/Y. I'd be down with exchanging friend codes to you guys, I'd even be down for battles here and there (just note that I only have about four "competitive" pokemon).

No midnight release over here! In fact, it's already 7:30am ... my only chance of getting it this early would be to download it but I'm not sure I want the download version. Anyway, I still haven't beaten Dream Team so I'll wait until I'm done with that first!

The current world record is 9.5hrs to beat champion, set almost 36 hours ago by some guy calling himself Werster.

He sounds like a total Pokemon scrub.

One badge so far. Current team, all male:

Ion, L15 Pikachu
Pixl, L15 Vivillon (Bug/Flying, the local Butterfree)
Suzaku, L17 Fletchinder (Fire/Flying Pidgeotto replacement)
Pond, L16 Frogadier (Water starter, first evolution)
Favonius, L15 Bulbasaur

Surprisingly good pokemon variety so far, even if my team doesn't show it, and the new battle graphcis were really well done IMO. The roller skates make travel quite a bit less tedious too.

I'm not liking the Exp. Share much right now, gives you too much experience too quick. But it's a passive inventory item that you can enable or disable as you want, so it's fine, I'll use it if the grinding becomes necessary.

I'm 0044-2808-6505. Add me. Or don't, whichever.

And while everyone else is playing X/Y, I've just started Black. (I got X, just haven't played it yet... still have White2 to do too...)

It's definitely an improvement in some ways from previous games. Lots of nice little tweaks I like so far:
  • All animations and text are much faster (but text speed still defaults to Medium for some reason, seriously who ever uses that)
  • You don't have to keep selecting Potion over and over to use several of them (the party list stays open until you use the last one or close it)
  • When a Repel expires, you have the option to use another one right there instead of opening the menu for it
  • The Y button menu is very handy; you can register multiple items (and menus like a Pokemon's status screen, item pack, etc)
  • TMs can be reused endlessly (HUGE improvement; no more wasting a good TM)
  • Sort function in item lists
  • Low health alarm is slightly less annoying (but still sucks)
  • No longer asks if you're sure you want to save
  • You no longer have the issue of your starter Pokemon being weak against the first gym, because
    Spoiler:
you fight a different gym leader depending on your starter, so ALL starters are weak against it - but you're also given a type that's strong against it near the beginning
  • NPC dialogue is generally a lot better
  • Wide variety of types/species/moves right from the beginning
  • Item finder no longer requires holding a button on the touch screen constantly
  • Items available at shops depend on your number of badges, which is a little odd, but oh well
  • Party menu and in battle screens look super spiffy
  • Sound effects and cries are pretty great
  • Every NOUN and VERB are no longer in ALL CAPS
  • EXP distribution is changed somehow when multiple Pokemon participate (lower levels get a bigger share?)
  • Accuracy debuffs feel nerfed; something that's been hit with 3 Sand Attacks can still actually land hits
  • Music is pretty good
  • Areas are nicely designed; easy to navigate (except the ones where the perspective keeps changing all the damn time) but lots of room to explore too
  • The way abilities are displayed in battle is neat
  • Pretty much entire instruction manual is accessible in the PC (but you have to get to it first, which is a bit silly)
  • Time and battery displayed on touch screen at most times
  • Actual plot
  • Most of the new mons aren't ridiculous looking and actually look like animals like they did in gen 1 and 2
  • Custom messages are hilarious ("I wonder if FIRE is yummy?")

Also some really cool new features: double wild battles, triple/rotation battles, real 3D (very pretty! but sometimes confusing perspectives)

I'm finding the difficulty to be pretty decent. In some ways it really holds your hand (you aren't given hints so much as flat out told what to do; you're quite literally given a Pokemon that can lay waste to the first gym, and Fighting types to destroy the second are easily caught outside), but at times you're made to go through a shitton of grass and trainers to reach some goal, so you can't just turn back and heal (or risk dying on the way back); enemy levels increase at a pretty good rate, and they have a variety of different moves, so if you're not super over levelled you actually end up having to strategize and use items and conserve instead of just spamming the same attack all the time.

It definitely does have its flaws, though - in particular I find the menus rather poorly done, especially compared to HG/SS.
  • Lag sometimes, especially when opening a menu. It manages to delay just enough that you'll think "oh I guess I have to press A to advance the textbox" and press it right when the menu appears and activate it without even seeing it every goddamn time. (Technology borrowed from Google? )
  • Low health alarm still exists, and still keeps going when it doesn't need to, like while your HP is refilling
  • C-gear and online stuff is generally baffling and awkward and a waste of battery power (and they've already shut down the online services ) - seems like they wanted social stuff like 3DS has, but it's specific to this game
  • Menus are often displayed on the top screen while a perfectly good touch screen is sitting there being useless
  • Item menu is particularly bad - half the screen dedicated to a bunch of pictures of bags; you just need to memorize which is which; quantities aren't shown until you select the item (this also applies to shops)
  • Compared to HG/SS, the Move Pokemon menu in the PC is awkward (instead of just listing your party at the side at all times, you have to drag the pokemon to an icon to make the list appear)
  • So much empty space in menus that could be put to use. When you select a Pokemon on the lower screen, the upper screen could be showing its stats and moves (which could certainly fit all in one page), but instead shows nothing at all until you actually open the page (and then the info is split across two pages with a ton of empty space still). While HG/SS had the menu on the touch screen at all times (very convenient), here you have to press a button to pull it up (other times the touchscreen is showing needlessly large wifi "radar" thing, or item finder, or nothing at all). Your trainer info screen is just a giant gym badge display, and you have to go to a second page to actually see useful things like your money.
  • No longer have the L=A option (that was subtle but nice, you could take your other hand off for a sec and keep playing)
  • Camera movement in battle is awkward especially for double battles. When two Pokemon are hit by a status move it zooms into one, shows the animation and textbox, zooms back out, and then repeats this for the other. No reason it couldn't just show both at once, especially since it does this for other animations/effects.
  • Camera is awkward out of battle too; lots of places it looks like you should be able to fit through but nope
  • HM moves still can't be forgotten except at a Move Deleter, even though you could just teach them again if you deleted one you needed
  • For that matter, HMs are still a thing, and still mostly shit moves, so you still need to sacrifice move/Pokemon slots to them
  • Artificial linearity is artificial ("oh I'm not gonna let you go by until you get the gym badge because I'm a cock and I just feel like standing in the way")
  • Sharp rises in opponents' levels means lots and lots and lots of grinding, and there are no good places for it. Choose from a place full of twats that spam sleep/paralyze/poison/confusion/burn moves and/or do stupid amounts of damage so that you need to heal after every 1-2 fights, or a place where the levels are so low it'd take forever. Also, fucking everything knows Detect/Protect.
  • Also fuck Incinerate and Bug Bite; two moves that just destroy any berry you have, at a point in the game when they're in limited supply. That's just a cunt thing to do.
  • No more automatic running shoes; have to hold B all the time, and without them is agonizingly slow
  • Cottonee fucking hacks, how does Hypnosis miss 5 times in a row on multiple occasions
  • Still no way to adjust screen brightness from within the game that I can find
  • NPCs are fucking experts at stepping in front of you as you walk by, I swear they go out of their way to block you

Very enjoyable game, but very tedious too. I feel like I'd enjoy it more if I used a hack for 2x or 3x EXP gain. Probably won't bother to do that though.

In regards to this, I'm sure it had a lot more usage/meaning in Japan, with the density of people who play the game over there. But outside of Japan, especially in places like where I live, it's incredibly rare that I ever see anyone with a game handheld of any kind unless you hang out around game stores. I've messed around with the Entralink, and it was fun for both me and my brother. (Then again, I really enjoy games that let you impersonate NPCs.)

Besides, they ask you whether or not you even want to turn it on.

In response to a few of your points, Rena...

Health alarm: finally fixed properly in X/Y - you get a few beeps when you first enter the red health zone, or when you send out a pokemon already in that state, and that's the end of it. No music overrides, no constant beeping. Took the fuckers long enough, god damn.

L=A is back in X/Y.

And HM moves are usually not required even in Black IIRC, though that may not have come until Black 2. Surf is, but Surf's awesome so it doesn't matter. In X/Y, Strength isn't quite required, but it'll cut a shitload of time off one trip (and it's an adequate attack anyway).

Your EXP gripe would probably be fixed by the new Exp. Share that you get really early on; I had to turn it off because I felt like I was levelling too fast.

Two gyms down now, finished the second in literally the worst state possible - one pokemon still standing, paralyzed and at 1 HP.

So I guess I will see when the games comes out, but I'm not holding my breath.

Exp. gain is static once again. I found this out trying to level up some freshly-bred Eevee and found the level 1s were getting the same Exp. as the things I was fighting with. Couple this with the lack of rustling grass (and the Audino often contained therein) and it's once again a tedious endeavor to level up a lowbie Pokémon.

EDIT:
I suppose it's worth noting that should you decide to use or over-use a single or small number of Pokémon, their higher levels will not impede their leveling by forcing a smaller Exp. yield.

Holy shit they actually removed dynamic EXP? That's nice!

Actually I ordered the game yesterday since I read up on the EXP all return and that alone would have fixed the problems with the EXP system in most cases.
