I wasn't sure what to expect from the episodes, but I enjoyed it. They felt a bit different than the other season openings. Darker tone, and a surprising amount of seriousness. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season, especially have the number of spoilers they put in the commericals.
The new episode(s), while it was decent... it didn't really feel like a good opening to the new season. While the lore/design for the new villain was pretty good, he was ultimately just a plot device. That was really disappointing, considering how awesome Nightmare Moon, Discord, and Chrysalis and the Changelings. I was super excited to see what they had cooked up as the evil-doer, only to see that he had almost no screenplay.
Everything else in it was perfectly fine, however.
Dare I say I think this is the best two parter so far? I got quite many enjoyable moments out of all the main characters, PLUS Spike got some interaction too! Possibly a bit too much Twilight focus? (The first song kinda sucked too...)
But the episode in general had a lot of good stuff along the lines of what I want to see, however, I do agree that there are a few odd things. Spoiler tag is sorta not working great in my layout, so take care!
Just watched the newest episode. Dem Pinkies. There wer so many of them that I wasn't surprised that many of the antics of the duplicate Pinkies were animation frames from previous episodes (rolling around, various dances, jump roping, etc.)
I actually agree with many of the others about that two parters. Compared to Chrysalis/Discord, Sombra was kind of a total bust. Pretty good two-parter, though out of the four, I'd rank it the second worst just behind the Nightmare Moon episodes.
On the other hand, today's episode was hilarious and awesome. I noticed that the writer (Dave something, last name escapes me) was one I didn't recognize, so I'm wondering if he's either new or simply obscure. Looking forward to more from him though.
I completely forgot about it airing until someone mentioned it that evening. I need to get used to the season being active again.
Reused animations aside, I was particularly impressed with the animation in this episode. There were a number of moments where I suddenly realized just how smooth and nice the movements were. This is when I wish Ponibooru was still around, since right now it would always have a fresh batch of screenshots of silly faces and such from the episode.

You do realize that you just contradicted yourself, if you are a male. If not then who really cares? This is a show that is intended for girls, but everything about the show's actual production is just so well done, writing especially, where it makes the show not only tolerable, but enjoyable for those outside of the primary demographic.
