Don't worry, it can't be worse then the Swedish dub. For in which Rarity's Opel is stuck in the tree and twilight can't help out with winter wrap up without her magic wand!

And there are several others which are as bad, if not worse. :I

Yeah the dubs are pretty bad but I guess many people from within the media industry still sees MLP as a bargain bin franchise, failing to see who has worked on the show and who has supported it.

To them, they see Friendship is Magic as much as much as we pictured the G3 show.

It's not really just MLP, it's kids shows in general.

Since it's for kids they often think it's smarter to save cash and have it done half assed then to make something good. It's no wonder most grown ups throw up when watching kid shows, to be perfectly honest, so do I when I see some of the stuff.

It's the point Lauren's been trying to make with this show.

Unfortunately, she didn't succeed. Instead of the message of "kids shows should be done genuinely good, to an standard everyone should be able to enjoy" reaching, what's heard is just "dumb kids shows have a creepy perifery fanbase".

But eh, the media industry is always stupid like that. I guess that the audience understands makes it a partial victory.

I didn't see it mentioned here, so I thought I'd bring it up for those that didn't already know: all of Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix.

If I actually had Netflix, I'd be watching some.

Yeah, Netflix. That would be how I've seen all the two seasons. Finished on, Wednesday, I believe?

Anyhow. Having not been in touch with the, how you say, 'community' during any of the airings (I only started watching more than the first episode in May, think), I feel like there are some things I...missed. And or was oblivious to. Like, let me quote this comment on the last episode:

I've no idea what was and what wasn't. And I think I'd feel better if I had some kind of timeline that shown when and where referenda was made (and if it has to come in the form of a fanfic, so be it, I may as well read some of those anyhow since I've seen everything that's official, so no spoiling things or so I think).

Did that make any sense? Is the request reasonable? Essentially I want to know what kinds of things in the show were easy to not know about for a simple watcher, since, well, I think I am a simple watcher. I know there are things that others would jump at seeing, but in my low little lifestyle of not getting the joke, I would like it explained to me so I may understand as well. It's probably a lot to ask, but... I suppose I do like being 'in the know' about things.

...Also, as to, "brony" status. Even as I watched the show, I only felt I could be labeled as 'in-training', yet, with both seasons cleared I am yet to feel like it is a removable label. I've picked up a small amount of merchandising, yes (a card pack and a figurine blind bag), but it is in my entirely incorrect opinion that, unless I can recite a large number of not-usually-thought-about ponies in the show (I cannot tell you which one Lyra is) and run random MLP scenes in my head with me inserted into them WITHOUT keeping a human form while doing so, I don't think I'm going to be calling myself a brony just yet. Again, entirely incorrect opinion, if there's an official definition for the word (and I mean official in a very wide-spread sense) then I might change my tune.

I think most of the "fanon-into-canon" is overreaction. There was Derpy, for a while, before anger led to her being removed from the episode she spoke in (even in Netflix releases supposedly, so you may never have seen it). Vinyl Scratch (a.k.a DJ-PON3, so lovingly named by fans) is referenced in a commercial. And then her connection to Octavia, referenced in the somewhat recent Season 2 Cast pic..

A lot of fan characters got tossed in as well, apparently. More than a few from NSFW artists at that.. Which honestly kinda is sad; Hasbro likely didn't know the char origins.

There are definitely references to things that exist on the net. (i.e those gents you linked the pic of, and I have a feeling the "chocolate rain" wasn't too far from potentially being intended reference.)

If I could remember more off the top of my head.. I'd share, but yeah..

EDIT: I also personally dislike the term 'brony', originally for its origin and now because it is slung around like "you have to call yourself one to be looked upon positively by the group" or "you're too old to like ponies, you're a freak." I don't really care for the alternatives either. I just like MLP; that's it.

If she was, not by the time I saw it. Can't recall the episode number too well (or subject, almost ever), but essentially she, broke the roof of city hall. I think.

OC ponies, huh?
...Can't say I care for that aspect.

The latter of those quotations, I knew about already. The former? Oh boy. I guess some people got the wrong idea.
...Though. You say you dislike its origin? Guess I forgot what it's origin really was. For the most part it's a po->bro conversion, and while I don't know whatever the official definition of 'bro' is, I -want- to say I have enough of an idea of what it means. So I can't say I get the anti-like about it. Either you also have a bit of a thing against being a 'bro', or I really did miss the origin of 'brony'. I will assume the latter.

Oh, is there any list of "Suggested reading" in terms of fan stories? I know I pulled up a link to an EqD outdated story archive from somewhere in the thread (and saved it into a Google search and forgot who in here shared it), but I'm too indecisive to pick any single one.

Personally I liked the Fallout: Equestria fanfic. But then again, I love Fallout, and enjoy ponies; so it goes.

And brony was started actually on /b/. The /b/ people who came to /co/ started posting to random that they were "/b/ronies". Of course people don't remember it since the viral explosion never left much room for origins to be explained. People either clung to it or turned it into a weapon without awareness of its start.
And really, most things from that board tend to be seen in a negative light by me. Being the same reason several mods started to try to destroy all the pony fans.

A good way to get a feel for the timeline of the fandom is to go back and look at reviews of episodes posted right after they aired. For example, Equestria Daily does them, and they usually highlight fun stuff like cameos.

As much as I love the show, I don't care for the term "brony", and rarely use it. Part of the reason is I don't call people "bro" either. The other reason is that I don't need to give myself a special term just because I'm a fan. I love Yoshi's Island to pieces, but I don't go around calling myself a "broshi".

(Note to self: spread term "broshi".)

Some the classics are:
Past sins (Epic, long, sad)
Progress (Humour)
Paradise (Origins, adventure)
Eternal (Character exploration, origins, shipping)
FoE (never read myself)
->FoE: PH (sequel, unfinished)
Simply Rarity (Origins, sad)

Less classic but stuff I personally like:
Moonbeam (Character exploration, adventure)
->Phases of the moon (Sequel, unfinished)
Sweetie's Mansion (Crossover, horror, unfinished)
Memories of days long past (Long, adventure, unfinished)
A world without rainbows (Action, adventure, unfinished)
My little alicorn (humour)

I keep forgetting the name of fics I have already read! :I

As for fanon turning into canon:

Luna: one can assume due to the huge fanbase that grew around her character at season had a huge impact on them deciding to give her a whole own episode. (Not even celestia have had one!) Not to mention she was often portrait in fan works as someone who is socially insecure and very not-so-modern due to being of the spin for so many years. They took these aspects and made them a whole lot better by actually doing their research!

Derpy: animation error in one scene, fans noticed and called her derpy. Animation theme caught on and started placing her with wall eyes in other scenes in other episodes. (She gives fluttershy a rose in sonic rainboom episode.) Huge fan base starts to form around her due to this and for season two she is in nearly every episode, AND she gets a voice and a few lines to say! I was on a livestream for most of season 2, and the fangasms that happen when she started talking AND was addressed by dashie as Derpy in name where huge!

Lyra and bonbon: Often showed near each other as background ponies. Fans started saying they are partners and such. Half confirmed by the animation team when they where interview (IIRC). In season 2 bonbon has a saddlebag with lyra's cutimark on it. (Most often ponies have saddlebags with their own!)

DJ-pon3: Mentioned earlier in this thread. First the DJ name was made canon in the Equestrian girls video. And now when she was made a brush-able her none scene name (Vinyl Scratch) was made canon as well. He eye colour was, however, NOT. So while plenty of fanon art show her with red eyes, the canon eye colour is magenta. (To be precise, the same colour as dashie!)

I'm sure there is more that I am forgetting! ^.^;

Well, thinking about it, I suppose I can't really say I've seen the term used on here much, if at all. Mostly just from other places, whether it be some guy talking about a big rig, or other players in Spiral Knights mentioning it after seeing related guild names(I am a Knight of Equestria! Subliminal advertising). Or just when I get bored and look at 4chan for something worth staring at. (This is largely unrelated though.)

This might say a thing about my, inability, but I looked in their 'blog archive', through the Jan/Feb/Mar '11 sections to see where any reviews were there... All I saw was multiple "Ep## announced!" posts. And putting 'Review' into their 'Google custom search' merely got product placements. You say it's there, I don't doubt you on it, I'm just thinking I'm missing it (too easily, I swear, this seems to happen more often than it needs to).

Good to know, I'll see about taking a look at those. ...except for the ones labelled ;sad; and ;unfinished;. If Ep28 and Ep51 told me anything, I can't really take the sorrow stuff head-on for whatever reason. Don't know why. Might be the video format, might just be the broken willpower that starts showing. And if I read the unfinished ones, I'll prob'ly end up forgetting to go back and look if/when they update/finish. So, won't waste time on them. Maybe it's a wrong way to think, but, it's still a way to think.

An'ways, seems like a bit of a start in info, thanks for what's been said so far. Though you'd think there'd be a repository on this kind of thing somewhere... Somewhere that isn't a Wikia, that is. I'd -like- to think that blind bag I opened had a character that actually does exist somewhere in the show and isn't a cheap-out Rarity recolor. But, for all I know, it is...

My apologies, I was using the wrong term. They call them Episode Followups. Of course, until the Super Speed Cider Squeezy 6000 episode, they tagged them as Episode Announcements. It's actually kinda messy, and they might not all be tagged correctly. The best way to find them all is to check the day each episode aired and the day after. I don't know exactly how long they've been doing followups either, so there probably won't be one for every episode.

Back when it was still alive, looking through Ponibooru was a great way to get an idea of the community as time went on. Each time an episode aired, it would get a flood of screenshots of interesting bits, including cameos and shout outs. Then shortly after, you'd get captioned images pointing out any new characters or new elements in the world. And by looking at the fanart between episodes, you could see any ongoing fads or new ones that spawned from the episode. If you can find another image board like that with a similar amount of popularity, you could probably find the same info.

As for the blindbag pony, have you tried looking on this list? Sure, it's on wikia, but it pretty much has every single pony that ever appeared at least once in the background of any episode. If you can't find any that even somewhat resemble the toy, then chances are it never appeared.

Looking at the 'stream' blog posts themselves as they appear in the provided links seems to be working out OK for now. I'm about, through to Ep30 or so? ...And when I'm done with that, I should read a fic, haven't even tried to do that yet, ought to.

Possibly irrelevant, but by the time I knew it was a thing it had announced it's shutting down. A pity, perhaps.

This count? Supposedly sapped up the majority (non-low-rated) of Ponibooru's pics, I think. If nothing else, I believe I know why Steve Magnet is a thing. (Because YT auto-captioning sucks)

Hmm. Well, that's -one- that checks out. And yet, searching that same page for #7 "Sugar Grape" does not turn up a result. I'll need to go and run a check for each of them later.

Also should later designate rewatching the two seasons, try and see just what sorts of precision I missed myself. Or just forgot, since my memory is never that good. (S1 will be more prone to benefiting from this)

Hey guys, I've been posting on /mlp/ a lot lately and just now found this thread

It's kind of amazing how I shared this show with Jul back in February back on the craziness domain as a rather Ironic joke, and it took months for it to get an official thread on the media board.

It's funny looking back on that thread seeing everyone go "WTF, a show for little girls" only to see that they're now hardcore fans

Keep up the good work and sorry for the late bump

So, today they announced that Season 3 is airing November 10th! (source) Certainly late compared to normal, which I guess can be attributed to there only being 13 episodes.

It's going to be nice to see what they will be doing with the characters for season 3! ´:3

I'm hoping to see more of the royal sisters, preferably both of them in the same episode interacting. (Maybe even poke fun at some tropes and send Twilight a report? )

I'd also love it if they fleshed out Applejack. I don't like Applejack that much, but I feel they have not fleshed out her character as much as they should have; Certainly there must be something more to her life then just the farm. :V

Other then that I am hoping for more "everypony" episode where all of the mane six do something together, I feel those episode hit home with me better then those who just focuses on a few. :3
