...Wait, who's this new guy coming to Jul to post wallpapers he made? How'd he break 9--- oh my god it's not a new guy after all

...Yes, I'm actually posting a thread in Art. Simply put, I've been toying around with dithering images for use as wallpapers - stemming from my experimentation with SymbOS and making wallpapers for that... then thinking "well shit, these could be used anywhere kind of"

I've only made one such wallpaper for now, but I'm kinda curious about if people would even like them.

(and, for those with DA accounts, it's here if you're interested)

The bush (huge blob of dark green) kind of bothers me. Such is dithering, though, I guess...

I'd be interested in seeing some more. I'm a bit of a background collector.

..and I haven't seen SymbOS mentioned in forever. that's awesome!

... mind if I try my hand at it?

Here is a test one. It uses a higher resolution though.

...God damn, I'm not the only one who's heard of SymbOS? Pretty incredible to hear. It's just a shame it's kinda incomplete (no network support and its IDE sucks so my plans of writing a text editor are shot - seriously, SAMPLE APPS crash the OS? The fuck?)...

Anyway, I made a 1440x900 version as well. It's not the exact same considering the fact that I'd kind of like to keep square pixels in these, but it's close enough.

New wallpapers for Halloween!

1280x800 // 1440x900 // 1920x1080 // 1920x1200

1280x800 // 1440x900 // 1920x1080 // 1920x1200

1280x800 // 1440x900 // 1920x1080 // 1920x1200

If I get a better camera at some point, I may use higher resolution source images. Question is, would that really work as well?

New wallpaper, now in a multitude of resolutions and an Atari 800-inspired palette.

1024x600 // 1024x768 // 1280x800 // 1280x1024 // 1440x900 // 1680x1050 // 1920x1080 // 1920x1200

The 1680x1050 wallpaper is definitely a higher reduced resolution - this was unavoidable, 1050 is a... very awkward vertical resolution. 1024x600 is, as well, though that's just because the usual reduction just shrinks the image far too much for this resolution.

If the iPod touch could take higher resolution photos (960x720 while video can be 1280x720? what) I'd probably cater to 2560x1440 displays as well.

This is an interesting experiment. I think the green one is still my favorite, though I really like the palette on the pink one. I'm looking forward to seeing more!

Glad to hear everyone likes them! I'd try to get some good Christmas themed wallpapers, but it seems as if my iPod's camera does not like taking pictures of lights in the dark. Yikes. (Granted, I haven't tried a still position, but judging by some of the other photos I've taken it wouldn't look very nice.) Not to mention it'd be a bit hard conveying it in four colors, and sixteen just seems to be a bit much.

However, I was playing with another photo I'd taken a while back of the Raven Motel in Media, and much to my surprise it worked REALLY well.

I'm linking to the wallpaper's folder from now on - it's easier on me to add in resolutions should I realize I missed one, or should someone ask for one.

I'd like to see more of these. In fact, the only reason I don't use one right now is due to me getting new awesome/cute pony wallpapers all the gosh darn time. :p

Anyhow, do you think you could get any wallpapers from snow shots? I'm not sure where you live. Although, I suppose I could go out and take a bunch of shots with my shitty 3 mega pixel phone camera and send over to you to work your magic on, that is, if you need snow shots. (Plenty of that stuff over here! )

Yeah, those backgrounds are marvellously awesome. I even saved a couple of them for future usage of desktop backgrounds.

I want to see more of your skills and magic on this!

I'll let you know if I need any snow shots. Over here in Philadelphia, we do tend to get snow, though it's not quite as common as oxygen like it tends to be in some places. (Depending on the resolution of these shots, I might even be able to take higher resolutions into account, such as 2560x1440 and 2560x1600... even though I dunno how much use that would be to most.)

To get around dark/bright blotches in images, you can probably selectively brighten or darken certain portions of the image. Once it's converted to low color, it shouldn't be too noticeable if you get it right. Now, getting around ugly "contour lines" you see on dithered images without using ordered dither, I'd certainly like to know.

Hmm, I've never actually considered brightening or darkening portions of the image - the darker spots haven't really bothered me very much aside from the bush in the first wallpaper, actually.

How would I go about this in, say, GIMP or Photoshop 7? I've just been dithering my images in Irfanview, as it seems to give me the best overall results. (I should try the first image again, actually - that one was dithered in Imagemagick, and I used Irfanview to apply the palette,

I guess most people use the dodge and burn tools for modifying brightness, or you can just use a black or white brush with the opacity down really low. I guess experiment. The best solution might even differ from situation to situation. GIMP and photoshop are entirely equipped to deal with stuff like that, but you should probably wait for someone more experienced in graphics/art than me to tell you how. I'm just going by what I think would work and what I've observed.

I'll definitely keep such things in mind, should I find a dark spot in a wallpaper that really irritates me.

However, this next one needed no such modification. I caught another decent shot - this time, finally, an indoors shot! This one was of the Springfield Hospital in Springfield, PA. Unfortunately, due to the events that have brought me there (Grandmother hospitalized), there's little to no chance that anything at all will happen this year, nor will I get some shots from NJ like I'd hoped. Oh well.

Even if it was under a bad time for your family and yourself, I am totally favoriting that picture. I'm all about hospitals and medical things because I want to be a surgeon in the future.

I hope your grandmother gets better, though.
Good job on the picture!

She was out a few days after you posted.

Unfortunately, she's back in. (This time, it's only for a wound, I believe - it should be only a one night stay.)

This one was taken at a cemetery where an uncle of mine was buried recently. I figured it'd make a nice shot as we drove on the road... and considering the subject matter, grays seemed appropriate.

Whoo triple posting.

New wallpaper: A non-monochromatic (although the monochromatic option is still available) wallpaper! This one was taken just inside Delaware.

Unfortunately, due to the dithering not quite wanting to cooperate when trying to do lower resolutions (too much detail loss in the lower part of the image), I've only got this one available in 1680x1050, 1920x1080, and 1920x1200.
