Narf! Well, I keep forgetting that I clear the post and then I change the sig name (which I intended to leave as dotUser at first but I forgot, yeah, it's the one identifying feature [short of the fact I am pretty much the only user here who {goes so far as to look more like} hides as much of the old post layout as possible.]).

I changed stuff again, another simple one. I was going to do something like an older layout with layers but then I remembered how much I wanted to murder it because it also broke other layouts by somehow altering the entire page's alignments instead of just the div itself's.

Looks pretty nice, earthy colours are underrated.

Also, took time to test another little layout thing.

Dunno if anyone else will like it though.

Sofi's new layout, using a vectorized floral pattern, intentionally channels the minimalist, ’70s-inspired æsthetics of assorted independent boutiques in the Alberta Arts District of Portland, Oregon. The soothing pastel colors and distinctly American design challenge the trends of dark, masculine colors and corporate animé-character properties typically seen in Jul layouts. The result is a timeless design that is nostalgic yet thoroughly modern.

“very nice layout i like the avant-garde yet vintage botanical arrangement”

Haley Joel Osment moved his cell phone to his ear. Dakota Fanning said her mother found out about him by reading a blog post’s comments section where he had said things about his first visit to New Jersey including when they screamed bad words across the Delaware River. “I think she knows you’ve stayed here overnight and that you’re 22,” said Dakota Fanning. “She already googled you a lot I think.”

Suddenly, I now have a layout made by our very own local artisan layout crafter, Sofi, with a background featuring Andy Gilmore's Intermezzo.

If there are white horses, one cannot say that there are no horses. If one cannot say that there are no horses, doesn't that mean that there are horses? For there to be white horses is for there to be horses. How could it be that the white ones are not horses?
If one wants a horse, that extends to a yellow or black horse. But if one wants a white horse, that does not extend to a yellow or black horse. Suppose that a white horse were a horse. Then what one wants [in the two cases] would be the same. If what one wants were the same, then a white [horse] would not differ from a horse. If what one wants does not differ, then how is it that a yellow or black horse is sometimes acceptable and sometimes unacceptable? It is clear that acceptable and unacceptable are mutually contrary. Hence, yellow and black horses are the same [in that, if there are yellow or black horses], one can respond that there are horses, but one cannot respond that there are white horses. Thus, it is evident that a white horse is not a horse.

What do you all think?

Pretty.

I have nothing to really add or modify or criticize; it's a bright layout without being obnoxious about it, and it doesn't detract from the actual content.

Considering that for what seems to be forever you were pretty strictly anti-layout, this is a surprising change of sides. I like it!

I like fixed background images. They make it look like the post is a window to a great expanse, with a paragraph of text floating between the reader and the abyss.

A really nice-looking abyss in this case.

I'm glad you guys are appreciating this layout so much! I spent all day yesterday working out the design with The Red Snifit and tweaking it. Fixed layouts are very "on trend" right now and they're probably here to stay.

With Snifit's layout, I wanted to create something that was colorful and geometric but also cool yet totally friendly. I picked the font Futura which Nicole described as kind of "daring" for a body text choice but I felt like it conveyed Snifit's personality.

The result is a design that is uniquely Snifit and breathes new life into his posts.

Layouts are so much fun. I think I've said this many times but I think they might be my favorite part of Jul. I might be making more. Or not. We'll see.

I'm diggin' it majorly. Amazing work, Sofi! (Your personal layout is super nice too--simple but elegant!)

I love the colors in particular...rainbows have always appealed to me. And the font is pretty cool; unusual while still being clear, readable, and attractive.

A++ layout, overall!

My only beef, and it's an insanely minor one, applies to both TRS's layout and your own. I think the text boxes are just a tiny bit on the narrow side, which just looks a bit off to me somehow. But that's solely a personal opinion, and it doesn't really detract from anything.

I'd honestly love to learn how to make uber-cute layouts of my own, but unfortunately stuff like that has never been my strong suit...still worth looking into, but yeah.

The funny thing is that when I first registered here, I didn't notice the layout background scrolling on Sofi's layout until like a day ago. Excellent design by the way! I most enjoy both these layouts but I must say I agree that the post text boxes are a bit on the narrow side.

It really sucks that Futura isn't bundled with any version of Windows (unless 8 changed this?), and is rather expensive to acquire legally.

I'd be interested in maybe making one for you some time! Or I could help you or something. To be honest, I don't really know much CSS or anything. Every time I make a layout like this, I have to do a lot of looking-up of things.

Oh thanks! To both you and Acey, I was pretty aware of how narrow it might look but the problem is if I widen it, I'll end up having super long lines instead of the juicy-looking book-like paragraphs. The text box is set to be the larger part of the golden ratio (a theme which is recurrent in many places in my layout—just look at the source).

Yeah, I hate that. Geometric sans serif fonts in general are pretty scarce. I was worried when making RedSnifit's layout about how it'd look with fallback fonts. Windows has terrible font selection.

Mine looks more on the "suckish, only tested in one browser" side ☹
- A simple RPG-style box with a gradiented background.
- A custom font (turned out to look like a weird mix of Apple's Chicago and whatever they used in the old Nokia phones).
Menu item-style links.

EDIT 22.10.13: Added some fallback fonts and adjusted the font itself so it'll look better in browsers that won't load the font.

EDIT #2: Fixed my web server so that the custom font works in Firefox.

Looks nice, but I would suggest using a much brighter/less saturated color for the text (partly because it's really blurry and hard to read on my TV/monitor, hooray 4:2:2 color subsampling).

You might be able to fix this by overriding the TV's EDID in Windows. I've done it before (albeit not to fix the exact problem you're having).
