Yeah, I'd say they should have waited our found more developers to tag along with it. Honestly, one game is a bit iffy to call a bundle.

It's Frozen Synapse, a game that normally costs $25, and you can choose what you want to pay for it on top of charity. Why does everyone complain about this?

Because...Internet?

You could offer these games for free and someone would still find a reason to complain.

I had a lot of trouble getting into it myself.

The information the game gives you on learning how to actually play is extremely sparse and until you know what you're doing it's incredibly difficult to know why your dudes are getting killed.

Couple that with the rather out-there difficulty of the campaign I can understand why people don't like it.

The underlying game is solid, but the newbie barrier is catastrophically high. Heck, I play TBS games to death (Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Civilisation, Heroes of Might and Magic) and yet I still can't finish level 1.

I'll tell you why.

The tutorial, is Grade-A disastrous, barely touching upon what seems to be important, and explaining barely nothing.

The campaign is needlessly hard, and not to mention with random generated levels adding a potential unfair advantage to one or the other side.

But here's my main fucking gripe, after trying to get the hang of it and consulting the freaking help section, which by the way was disastrously written and formatted I found a series of priorities for encounters.

Still > Moving

Cover > No Cover

Changing Stance > Keeping Stance

Aim > No Aim

Most make sense, the only one I'd touch one would be the changing stance one, but I digress.

Armed with my new-found knowledge I set myself up for a multiplayer match, with average results, we both take two guys down and have one left, now here comes the "fun" part.

I had positioned my last guy crouching with the lower wall of the map behind under him, and a half cover to the left him, and quickly observed my opponent walking past a ways up, not sure if he had seen me, but rather irrelevant.

Having concluded where he would be, I popped out from my cover and aimed at him, ready to blast and take the kill.

I was not moving.

I had cover.

I was switching my stance.

And my aim was close to straight at his last guy.

But guess fucking what, his guy still wins the encounter, not even giving me a draw.

If you give a fucking set of factors, with priorities, then fucking follow them.

Oh and sure, the game might be good for the connoisseur TBS gamer after he spends ten hours on learning it. But I don't have the time for that with my current steam syndrome.

This game sucks, end of story.

Other things of note: No clue whatsoever is given to what range the different units have is also pretty terrible, as that would be a rather important part of playing the game, not to mention that the rifle guys seem to have a pretty insane range.

Honestly, I didn't even find out that you could give enemies moves during the planning phase either until I read an obscure forum thread.

Basically, it's a promising game that lacks so much polish and refinement that it kills the desire to play it for all but the most enthused about it.

Personally, I think you just suck at learning games especially considering the Tutorial DID teach you the basics on how to play the game. I know it did because I just completed it and learned everything I needed to know save for shotguns, but that is easy to pick up on.

In all, the game doesn't suck because you don't want to learn it. It is supposed to be one about strategy, learning where to move your units, figuring out what your opponent will do, etc. If you don't want to learn a difficult game, that is not the game's fault.

Learning a game should be fun.

If learning a game is frustrating, painful and causes you to not want to play anymore then the learning of the game is horribly designed.

And yes, reading around the steam forums and the dev forums the conclusion is basically that the tutorial sucks and the campaign difficulty is as balanced as a one-legged goat on a unicycle.

I've wanted to play this since I saw the trailer for it like a year ago.

I'm pretty sure I still want to give it a go? The thing is I want to be able to play against a human being, because a game like this is about mindgames and so AI is just tragically unable to give the right kind of experience.

If someone around here is willing to do multiplayer with me I'll buy it. I'm willing to suffer through a poor tutorial.

Woo, now a reason to care.

As a chemist I'm wholly interested in the idea although I found the interface in the demo confusing.

Might pick it up for a few extra dollars.
