Baseball? What's that?

I don't really follow sports at all. I can recognize a few teams, and I sort of know how to play baseball, but I don't really follow the news at all. I don't know anything about any team. My boyfriend shares the disinterest, so I don't feel the need to learn anything about sports.

I know baseball, but... my home Team is the Dodgers... and they're just doing horribly for the last couple years...

The only sports I really follow are the Red Sox and the Celtics... beyond that, I guess I'll watch the Patriots or Bruins if they get in the Stanley Bowl or something.

June through August makes me go nuts sports wise. Especially even more so now that the NBA and NFL are locked out.

Oh god, please don't remind me of gym class... 1k isn't bad, but anything more than that and my lack of endurance catches up and I die.

Doesn't help that our 5k exam was in the rain.

I'm a cross country runner. A year ago, I ran 13 miles in the rain for fun.

I LOVE running in the rain.

a 1k is short. I could run that in...

17:47 in a 5k=3:30ish in 1k.

How about them Red Sox? I heard they beat your little Canadian birdies. : J

I miss the Montreal Expos, Sofi. Toronto's OK but... yeah... no baseball here anymore. :\

The only sports I really follow are the Red Sox and the Celtics... beyond that, I guess I'll watch the Patriots or Bruins if they get in the Stanley Bowl or something.

Erm... were you watching the Stanley Bowl last month, Imajin?

But those sports guys are totally not as awesome and ripe for the picking as you are.

...How many of these do you have left, Rick?

Wait, I probably shouldn't ask.

The farthest I've had to run for PE classes is one mile. Took me around 9 minutes, IIRC. I'm not very good at athletic stuff.

Oh I wasn't either. We would take a run around the school 5 times. Definitely wasn't 5k total and it was at our own pace so you could more or less jog.

Still, given how I was not the most athletic person in high school... LUNGS. BURNING. OW.

I stopped having normal PE classes in 8th grade. From 9th to 11th grade it was weightlifting. We did normal gym weights mostly but we did some fun stuff like flipping tractor tires and throwing shot put style.

I stopped doing PE in 8th grade as well, but after that I just didn't do any sort of gym class.

PE was only required for me through the first half of 9th grade. I never took a PE class after that, because I hated PE.

I was unathletic and they put me in 6th period PE, which (a) had about 70 students and (b) happened to have most of the best athletes.

I'm obviously not of the same mold as a lot of people in here haha...

I loved PE. I was only required to take it for a semester, but I ended up signing up for it all four years of high school.

I was one of the more athletic people in my class. If I had time I would have been a varsity basketball player and track runner (spring) as well as a varsity cross country runner.

I think my records for some distances are
1 mile- 4:50
3 mile- 17:30
5 mile- 28:40
10 mile- 58:23 (the day we ran 14 miles in the rain. Our coach met us at the 10 mile mark to tell us our times)

I'm a much better distance runner than sprinter, but I can still do events like the 800m and 400m and be competitive.

Actually, while it will eventually destroy his kneecaps... I know one person who did that and made it to 80 without wearing them out.

And he outlived all the others on the same street as he.

So it may be a small price to pay for increased longevity.

Of course, I have a cheat code. Family members of mine routinely live to 90+ years old, even in the bad old days when that was nearly impossible.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I remember having to do the 1 mile run for PE. I did it for 2 days because the first day I kind of half-assed it and took like 10 minutes, but then the second day I wanted to improve my time and I got around 8 minutes.

PE was not optional in my school. You had to take it for 3 days per 6 day cycle every year. You also didn't get an option for weight lifting or anything, just general PE, though I think sometimes if you were on a sports team, you could use the weight room instead.

For that 1 mile run, one of the students got like 4:30-ish. That's pretty crazy.

As for me right now, due to really bad family history of heart problems, I mostly have to do cardio, to keep my heart strong. I would previously do a shit-ton of jumping jacks every other day or so (star jumps for commonwealth English speakers), because it was an OK workout and didn't need any special equipment and I could do it in my bedroom, but it was starting to hurt my legs, so I now have en exercise bike I've been using usually every other day but some times I'll do it on consecutive days, for the past couple weeks. It should be much less damaging, and it already gives me a harder workout that's less painful to do. So far I do a bit over 9 virtual miles in a half hour. Not nearly as impressive as running that distance since biking is more efficient, so I imagine most people could make that same distance/time, or better.

At the school I went to, we had maybe 3 people in the whole school (population 500) who could get under 5 minutes.

I was the slowest of the three unfortunately so no one talks about me (except for the fact I still hold the pacer test record at the school)

I know a guy who ran a 4:20 mile, and then got high to celebrate it. Talk about irony.
