I remember having to do the 1 mile run for PE. I did it for 2 days because the first day I kind of half-assed it and took like 10 minutes, but then the second day I wanted to improve my time and I got around 8 minutes.
PE was not optional in my school. You had to take it for 3 days per 6 day cycle every year. You also didn't get an option for weight lifting or anything, just general PE, though I think sometimes if you were on a sports team, you could use the weight room instead.
For that 1 mile run, one of the students got like 4:30-ish. That's pretty crazy.
As for me right now, due to really bad family history of heart problems, I mostly have to do cardio, to keep my heart strong. I would previously do a shit-ton of jumping jacks every other day or so (star jumps for commonwealth English speakers), because it was an OK workout and didn't need any special equipment and I could do it in my bedroom, but it was starting to hurt my legs, so I now have en exercise bike I've been using usually every other day but some times I'll do it on consecutive days, for the past couple weeks. It should be much less damaging, and it already gives me a harder workout that's less painful to do. So far I do a bit over 9 virtual miles in a half hour. Not nearly as impressive as running that distance since biking is more efficient, so I imagine most people could make that same distance/time, or better.
