I've run the PC MK2 in DOSbox before so there's always that option.

Yeah, DOSBox seems to work fine much of the time for me with stuff.

Also, BMF and I deduced that the "Extra Track" in the Genesis MK1 is merely a glitch. It's just the Throne Room music played too slow for a loop, then it goes back to normal. Shoot, I thought I was onto something. Oh well.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get it to run in DOSBox, yet. It (mk2.exe) starts to run (or at least the DOS4GW stub does), then quits, claiming it can't find the CD drive... even though I did mount it.

...maybe I should try running it from the Windows version of DOSBox, already installed on the same system. The tower didn't like it when I tried running with the DOS drive as the main (and only) drive, either.

Okay, I'll take a look when I finish checking the posts.

I managed to get it working, though, on Win98 (booted to DOS-only mode). I realized I'd put a REM on the line in autoexec.bat that runs MSCDEX some time ago; with MSCDEX running, the game loads and runs. I didn't have any sound, though, because there's no sound card setup lines in autoexec or config.sys, including the SET BLASTER= line. And, no gamepad support (did anyone ever have a workaround for those games that only look for gamepads/joysticks on the older sound cards' gameport/MIDI interface ports, when you're trying to run them on a newer system that doesn't have that port (integrated sound, bleah) and only has USB ports?).
Now that I've removed that REM, it'll probably load in 'normal' Win98, too.

But, it didn't have that AP manual check, at any time. I couldn't say whether or not there is a version of MK2/PC out there that does use it, however.

Forgot all about this video I posted of the UMK3 Juggernaut hack, which has H Smoke and Noob Saibot playable on the select screen. He also inserted Noob and Smoke's Trilogy endings, as well as made it so the bios screens for all characters are available rather than just the 4 new UMK3 characters.

Here's some thread necromancy with CONTENT.

I was playing Mortal Kombat Trilogy the other day and got hold of a move list and their are several moves that have been cut from previous games (besides the one we already mentioned) that made it intro Trilogy.

Baraka:

Blade Spin - Probably cut because it gives him huge range and would have more juggle potential
than MK2 used.

Goro:

Twirl Spin - Likely had to have been an unused MK1 attack since MKT uses the original Goro sprites
unaltered. Probably would have made him harder than he already was, and was cut.

Jax:

Double Energy Wave - Does a good deal of damage, and was probably cut for that reason.

MK1 Kano:

Has a blade spin attack that was too powerful in MK1 and thus cut. What is it with these guys and cutting spin moves?

MK2 Kung Lao:

Has Raiden's superman move. Probably cut because it was repetitive.

Liu Kang:

Has a red bicycle kick. Looks very similar to Johnny Cage's red specials.

Motaro:

Now has an over the back toss. This could be new to trilogy as they most likely still had the Motaro model handy. Doubtful though considering the only real work they put in MKT was recording a new Johnny Cage, and giving some very heavily un play-tested moves to Noob and Rain.

Shao Kahn:

Now has a pick up and smack attack. Most likely unused from UMK3 and the like under the same logic as Motaro's throw.

Nightwolf:

Again another red version of a move, his shoulder dash.

Rayden:

Has a lightening attack that goes in reverse. Probably too hard to dodge in the MK2 engine and was cut.

Scorpion:

Has a forward teleport punch. Probably removed for balancing reasons.

Sektor:

Has a double missile shot . The damage on this thing adds up very very quickly, so its pretty obvious why this was left out of MK3 and UMK3.

Sindel:

Has a double fireball. Probably cut from the vanilla 3's for the same reason as Sektor.

Stryker:

Has high and low double grenade attacks. Yet another double. This thing is nearly impossible to avoid, and since he can do it high or low it makes it especially deadly. This move does give you a very long recovery time however. Probably the longest of any move in the game.

I have to say, I don't even think that Motaro and Shao Khan's moves go used in the N64 version! Even then, I don't really know how to go about doing them.

I do remember them saying something about Baraka's blade spin move going unused, and that was totally a right call.

I remember also Kung Lao's and Goro's "new" attacks look completely bizarre and uncharacteristic of those guys, so I also see why they were cut anyway.

The N64 version didn't have all the extra room afforded by a disk so they had to cut some characters/moves. The bosses in the 64 version do have fatalities but they were very quickly thrown together, and were likely not cut from another game.

No they weren't, they pretty much just re-used what they had for sprites for fatalities. I did sorta forget about MKT for N64 having less info.

If someone could still crack the image compression code for the Mortal Kombat arcade games, we would seriously be in business. It's like...I'd love to actually do it instead of making wishes or requests, but I literally have no idea where to begin in that.

Have you tried unzipping the romset and opening some of the roms in tile molester? I just opened it up and looked through them in Winrar. Unfortunately there's not one labeled something like GRAPHIC.bin or anything. It'd be annoying but its possible you could just open them in TM until you find something, but if they are compressed its like you said gonna be hard.

Very nice info there. All of my MK hacking experience is with the arcade version, and admittedly isn't much because it crashes so easily.

Yeah, I know that routine well. I worked with all three, and the most I was able to do was hack bosses/secret characters into the character select screen. But they would crash when selected or crash once you tried executing a move

Here's some MK1 info. I just messed around with playing as Shang Tsung and here's what you can do:

Move forward or backward (but don't double tap!)
By holding down you can transform into a glitchy liu kang!
While transformed most of the attack buttons will actually allow you to damage your opponent!

Unfortunately you have to activate this code after a match is loading or it will freeze for some reason, this would make using him against the CPU unpractical, not to mention there's probably no way you'd be able to hit them with his glitchy attacks. Also if you try to use him against the CPU his giant opponent block from the Battle Plan shows up next to your opponent. It looks quite odd, but its something to mention.

Oh so hey, this got a link to on the wiki, but I think it deserves a lot of mention right now.

Somebody managed to figure out how to dig into the graphics of MK1 and MK2.

It's spread out over a couple of pages. If I get some time later I'll add in the highlight things of note. I tried sending this guy a PM since I've had an account over on that site since back in the days when it was mk5.org, but I have yet to hear back from him (mostly because I just sent the PM today).

If he knows how to dig through the graphics, then this ought to get really, really interesting, if these pieces are any indication.

Hot damn! The unused Shang Tsung / Goro fatalities from MK1 were the main reasons why I wanted to crack open the game's graphics banks in the first place. Also, confirmation that most of the new stuff in MKT was just dummied out from the original games.

Midway was extremely lazy when they made the MKT ports so its no surprise at all that they resued this stuff. I'd also like to guess that the reason that unused Goro defeated stance was cut is because you can obviously tell he's claymation as his knees have no bend.

Also while I'm thinking about it did we mention already that the wasteland level had a crucified Shokan in the background that was cut out?

I added this stuff to the wiki but the MK2 SNES boss moves were removed. I guess they don't qualify as unused playable characters if doing anything crashes the game.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
