Since this is my current career path right now, I figured it might be an interesting thing to talk about.

Do you have any experiences you remember with substitute teachers back when you were in K-12 (or the equivalent if you're in a country that doesn't go by that route), be they good, bad, or ugly?

I mostly remember subs generally giving us fuckloads of busywork instead of actually teaching us the stuff. That may have been the fault of the regular teacher, though, not trusting the sub's ability.

Although sometimes in English class when we had a sub, we'd read plays and have different parts, which I found rather fun

Paulguy's Post configuration
Usually either let us do what we wanted to some or they were total cunts. Also sucked when they weren't quite aware of/prepared for/giving a shit about specific student requirements. :/

ugh...

One teacher in particular...

Her name was Ms. Heck, She began the lesson by telling us to seperate our table groups and face them front. Then she basically treated us like idiots, yelled at us and when we wouldn't stop talking, she had us stand up and put our hands in the air and hold them until one girl fainted. needless to say, I didn't see her again. Other than that, if this is your career path, don't listen to the kids if the teacher has wirtten something else. I had a sub in finanical management and a rare security door opening klaxon went off. All the other teachers knew what this was as did the students, but we were able to fool her into thinking it was a fire drill and we skipped about 10 minutes of class outside laughing.

Huh... all substitute teachers I've had were awesome. Very attentive and with entusiasm on their work and explaining anything you asked. (Basically what half the other teachers didn't do)

We always had worse substitute teachers than main teachers. Not that they were lazy but refusing to interact once in an entire class period would lead to them ignoring you for the rest of the class time or giving you an F on everything turned in that day regardless of hard work.

I had one that would make up all kinds of
crazy crap and then attempt to convince everybody it was true

I'll try and remember some of his stories here sometime

I don't really remember any substitute teachers from school, but my friend is one now. He has some interesting stories sometimes.

I hated all of my substitue teachers.

I mean, if they were teachers in school who were substituting for a teacher, then that's fine. But if it's a teacher from a different school, they always sucked.

I had a Substitute Teacher named Mr. Stern.

He would scream extremely loudly at everyone for the mistakes of 2-3 students. Also he never taught us anything useful.

Also, one day, he had a mental breakdown in class and screamed so loud you could hear him a mile away.

...

Don't ask me about elementary school subs. Really. They went downhill from Mr. Stern.

College subs on the other hand... all of them were okay.

I have had a good mix of bad subs, and really cool ones. One of them would give us candy, and tell us really funny stories he made up to keep us in line! Then again, he decided he knew more about my neurological condition than I did, so that was kind of a damper...
Weird thing is, he shared a last name with another sub, who really wasn't all that great. Yeah, he would teach us what we wanted to know, but that was about it; he didn't seem to have the same enthusiasm as full-time teachers, which is understandable.
And then I had really sexist and/or not so bright subs, which really makes me question how they hell they got certified.

I swear, my school only employed one substitute teacher at all. No matter what class it was, if we needed a sub, what happened was this:

You walk into the room and you hear: "Hello, my name is Haas. I'm not a teacher so just open your book to and do the ." That's it. No matter what.

I tended to leave substitute teachers alone, because I realized that babysitting a bunch of mouth-foaming invalid children was the last thing they wanted to do that day.

Except this one Hungarian artist that my 3rd grade school flew in from Europe to take over after my original teacher left. Oh how we all despised that wretched woman. We drove her off in a month. The principle was pissed at our class since the two were personal friends, but nothing ever came of her wrath.

Subs were very rare at my college. I only had them a few times.

Once, a teacher was gone and she just cancelled class for those days instead of calling in a sub.

So you had a sub that let you guys kill each other?

Most of mine were the same way, though. I do remember a few who were pretty clear that they wanted us to get our work done and were serious about it. I usually did my work anyway, so it never mattered much to me.
