As initially reported by iLounge, the Verizon iPhone 4 may exhibit the same alleged signal attenuation problems as the original iPhone 4, and then some. According to the video, the infamous “Death Grip” can still affect 3G signal strength on the updated CDMA handset. Additionally, a new two-handed landscape grip, cutely dubbed the “Death Hug,” will cause a similar attenuation to your WiFi signal. No word on if this is unique to the Verizon iPhone or if it was merely discovered on one.

You may remember the media frenzy when early reports of the iPhone 4’s “Death Grip” were released. Apple surely faced a PR nightmare, but in the end consumers agreed that the iPhone 4 (despite its highly publicized, over-dramatized shortcomings) was among the best smarthphones on the market. The vast majority of users discovered they were not affected by the “Death Grip” problem in every day use and those that were simply bought a case (or received a free one from Apple), which largely fixed the issue.

My prediction is that this “problem” will be similar to the last one: a lot of smoke, no fire. Most users (especially those in areas of strong coverage) won’t ever notice any sort of signal loss regardless of their grip. Those that do will either get case or just hold it different. Either way, the strengths of the Verizon iPhone 4 will greatly outweigh this minor (yes, minor) flaw.

Or Apple Engineers could get their act together and not get laughed at.

As someone who lives in an area with poor reception anyway, I should not have to "hold the product differently" to use it.

(Of course I don't buy apple anyway, so )

If holding my laptop a certain way killed the wifi signal on it, I would not consider that a "minor" flaw. Really, your post is full of Apple ass kissing. Christ.

Good to see that they don't actually fix any of the issues, though! Guess it's like the Pinto thing -- cheaper to just throw free cases at everyone rather than actually fix it.

Apple: Hold Phones Different™

This is the first time I've heard that different carriers have different versions of the same device. I figured it would be exactly the same.

(Not that I really pay attention to them anyway.)

at&t and T-Mobile are GSM, while Verizon and Sprint are CDMA- any phone that crosses that line is going to have to have a different model...

The funny thing is the VZ iPhone redid the whole antenna, and came out far after the "Death Grip" stuff- so really I guess this just shows Apple doesn't give a crap. Expect the same sort of thing on the iPhone 5.

All I did was quote the article so you can blame the article writer and not me for the bias to Apple.

Next time, you may want to outline the fact that it's a quote by using quote tags.

But I still think it's ridiculous that Apple's engineers managed to miss this problem entirely. It's a very good thing I don't use Apple products anymore (bar my iPhone, but I got it for free, I hate it and it's just temporary).

I hate all apple products even the 160GB ipod classic I have and I only use because it is the only one big enough for all my music, videos and pics.

Anyway how do I make quote tags or I would have if I did now.

Very simple. Quote any post and then just have a look at the tags.

You can use the "Quote" link at the upper right of each post to quote it, or you can do it like this:

My Nokia 1100 phone gets reception miles and miles away outside of the range of any new phone. Buying a new one is a downgrade for me, no matter what I get.

I own an iPhone 4 and can attest to the death grip. It does reduce the signal strength if you tightly grip the phone on the bottom left with your left hand. I see the bars drop as everyone else does. But you rarely hold the phone tight enough to see this happen and it does not interrupt service for me. I can still make calls and browse data while deathgripping my phone. It was overplayed when the phone first came out and now it is just a minor nuisance. It may reduce speed, but my speeds here at my work desk are horrible anyway so I can't really tell a difference.
