For the record, this is the same guy who owns (owned?) the Super Mario Bros. 2 prototype that was leaked to the public several years ago. Unfortunately, he's kept a much tighter grip on his ROM dumps since then.

But putting a 120k price tag isn't selling it. As in, you aren't giving it to anyone. You're just showing it at that point.

Except for the unlikely case some crazy rich collector DOES show up, but you can't call that "lost" because it was never offered to anyone else in the first place.

I'm probably going to slightly, only because if shit goes wrong and both the prototype cart get screwed AND the stuff the ROM is backed up into is somehow wiped out? Or something really stupid happens to it *Cough*Lufia 2*Cough* Well there goes that piece of history that we'll likely never, ever get back again.

One of these days I'm going to get a Prototype cart of something. If I do that, I'm going to get it dumped for everyone. I don't really care if it lowers the value of it or anything, I just want people to experience it as well.

I can agree with you that he really isn't selling it because the price is ridiculous. What sucks the most is that such high prices prevent such prototypes from going public, assuming the owner wants to sell it to begin with.

Honestly, I feel the only way to get prototypes to go public is for a bunch of people to group their money together to buy it. I believe something like this was done for the Glover 2 prototype. However, this would still be difficult to do for these prototypes because of the steep price.

I own a legitimate prototype. I want money for it (because I need it to move somewhere else) BUT I also want to release it so the masses can experience it.

I'm just afraid the two different corporations who own the IP behind the game would nail me to a cross.

If I had a prototype, I'd have someone trustworthy dump the ROM and keep it on hold, sell the game without the devaluing bullcrap, and THEN release it to the public.

I'd like to think this is what these sellers who have protos "lost forever" do too and that they have a dump scheduled to magically surface in two years or something, but that's not happening.

While we're on the subject, anyone know where I can get two cart protos dumped? All I ask is that they pay shipping to them and back to me. They're two EA game protos so the contents aren't that valuable. I just want my carts back. ^^;

(Oh and that first proto I mentioned has been backed up since the day I realized what it was.)

Depends on the system and whether or not the ROMs are socketed. I personally can dump most (maybe all) N64 carts, and the hardware for dumping socketed ROMs can be had for under $100.

Lord Nightmare over at... Digitpress will dump your SNES carts for free and he will ship them back (forgot what I paid for the SNES Burn-In Cart shipping the second time around.) I had no problems.

I can't make any promises about the Genesis cartridge (especially since I would have to buy the hardware and I'm pretty much broke), but I can dump the N64 cartridge as long as you're not worried that I'd be plugging it into a Gameshark.

Well, for starters, I don't own an N64. Getting one would also be a problem. Down here the stupid sellers want $30 for the system alone. WITHOUT CABLES OR CONTROLLERS.

I really want a system, but I don't want to pay lots of money for one.

I'd like to request some help. not sure if anyone's seen it, but by accident I stumbled over uploaded dumps of some demos/protos of a 2 & 3 in the Gex series for the PS1. I'd rip stuff myself, but, well, the youtube link in my thread asking for help explains it better than i can it words. They've officially been declared protos by the admins at TCRF so it's ok to link to them. Just asking for help.

I randomly got interested - a quick search on ebay shows a dozen of Gameboy prototype carts. I've sort of wanted to have at least one prototype for no other reason than having one, but I wonder if any of those could be worthwhile to get dumped into a rom.
