That exact cart, as well as a couple others like it, have come up before, but I don't think anything conclusive has been figured out about them, i.e. where they came from, for what purpose they were made, etc. And I'm too lazy to look through the threads below again, not least because it's pretty late for me.

Huh, I never knew that similar carts were found previously. The 2000 copyright kind of dashed my hopes a bit.

That first thread you linked to is pitiful though. The span of time that thread covers is like a few years. The actual owner of those carts is incompetent at best. It's just 7 pages of "I don't know how to dump them" or "I can't get a Windows XP computer". I don't understand how one wouldn't want to learn how to properly dump the carts if you have them in your possession. It was like 2012 when they posted. Finding a used Windows XP computer should be easy and cheap. If they actually did dump and compare without posting about it then why create a thread at all? It's sad just to get attention like that.

But I digress.

That whole debacle was a mess, coupled with misplaced enthusiasm for something that clearly was from some years AFTER the original Japanese release of the original Pokemon, which pretty much says everything about the chances it was anything interesting.

It's great when prototypes have dates like that so you can know to avoid them and not waste your time. If you ever see a date that's later than the original Japanese release of a game, or if it's a prototype that shows the name of the localization name for a game (i.e there was a "Mystical Ninja" proto for N64 with Japanese on it and everything, but it turned out to just be a final of the English version), it's safe to say you shouldn't waste your money.

I've been buying protos for some years now and have learned this lesson the hard way.

Though if it is cheap you might want to waste your money, as localisation teams sometimes add back debug stuff (see Super Mario Sunshine "test11" map).

Not sure it warrants a thread, but I have this scan of an early preview of Pulseman I thought I'd share.



GoldS found graphics for the earlier iteration of that first boss in the ROM, I believe.

This comes from an issue of Beep! Megadrive. I have all issues from November 93 to January 95 (final issue), so if anyone wants me too look out for early versions of anything that would have been previewed between then, feel free to let me know.

The link to the dump is in the talk page. Requires a login to see the download (I assume).

Also the Pokemon proto seems to be just a demostration cart for stores. The most you'll get is script differences or some enabled debug options, if you're lucky. Chances are, it's identical to the final.

Well I know the dump was downloadable at one point. I actually have the legit prototype myself on an old drive somewhere. I could get it, but for a four byte difference proto, that's too much effort. You are better off just asking BMF54123.

It's from on a drive where are the pointers to all the files have been deleted. I recovered NES files off of it before but it's tedious to sift through the files because the partion is in ext4.

The Rockman X3 prototype for SNES has finally been dumped and released! Took months of work and specialized hardware but it's finally out there.

Plenty of graphical differences, including completely different sprites for Volt Catfish, Neon Tiger, Byte, and (I think) Vile.

Also I think there's some sorta annoying system where you can get stunned by an attack and are unable to move for a few seconds... glad they got rid of that...
