I figured that, if someone wanted to jump in and mess around with prototypes, I'd keep a running list of what there is. If one is already done, I'll just cross it out. If I miss one we've already done, let me know too.

I'm going to just start with NES prototype carts, and then you guys can just help me add or subtract to the list from there. I'll be listing them with the ROM (E) (U) (J) thing in there too when possible. This is just stuff from a folder I have:

All the interesting stuff is in the Super Pitfall II prototype, but that's not saying much.

I've been disassembling the original to get a better idea of how everything works. I plan on documenting exactly what changed between the original, the review copy, and Super Pitfall II.

I was thinking, maybe with games with minimal Prototype differences, should we just keep it on the same page (i.e. Chip & Dale, Atlantis No Nazo)? If so, maybe we can clear out some of the list.

Also, what of SNES/Genesis Protos? I'm not as up on those.

I thought that's how it was already handled with games that have little differences in their protos. I know the Atlantis No Nazo page does this.

Aw fuck I'm a moron; there isn't any proto info on the Atlantis page. I swear there was some at one time.

My mistake.

I find the Unreal protos fascinating. If its worth noting on the Wiki, the readme to a few of them mentions they were also in development for the DEC Alpha.

It's an interesting tidbit anyway! Thanks!

I also added a bunch of SNES proto titles. It's not the end-all, be-all SNES list however. I also remember someone on here did quite a nice little run-through of some of the TMNT Tournament Fighters differences, but I can't remember who it was. Surprised that hasn't gotten added yet.

I'll look for some more SNES/Genesis protos for if someone wants to look into them to report to the wiki.

DEC?

And yeah, they are very interesting, but for some of them, the biggest differences are in the maps, which are a pain to document the wiki.

You could always do what I did for the Wolfenstein 3D Alpha and document where the real big notable changes are between the maps, unless every single map is completely different from the final version.

I honestly don't know though, since I'm not familiar with most PC protos.

Good point. I ususally get too hung up on documenting minior things like "oh no this ammo box was swapped with a health pack in this proto".

Yeah, just cover the broad stuff for now and get to the nitpicky stuff later. Which reminds me that I still need to do that last bit on Hans Grosse for Wolfenstein 3D. I'm not really all that sure how to compare it photo-wise, and I don't know all the specifics of how Hans Grosse works because I keep dying on Level 2.

Also, on the search for more SNES Protos. Not gonna download 'em right now, but just for awareness purposes they'll be there. However, I'm using a list that dates back to 2008, possibly older, so I'll probably be missing quite a few protos.

Here's how his level works; you start off in the small room, then enter the large one. At the end of the large one is a door. Open it and Hans will attack. Once he's dead he'll drop a gold key. Grab it, then enter the room he was in. Inside that room is a door that can only be unlocked with a gold key. Since you have the gold key, open the door and head straight. Soon after you enter the room with the sky texture in it the level will end by panning the camera towards your character and he'll jump.

On that note, do you know of any level select cheats in the proto? I'd like to try out Level 9 myself, but none of the saves included with the proto go past Level 6 and I'm not in the mood to trudge through two levels to test out one of them.

I don't. I'm not very good with programming languages at all so I have no idea where to begin. Sorry. =/

However, I listed every SNES prototype I could find from that list that I knew of. Like I said, there's probably some more. However, there might be certain ones of interest to some people.

Especially a certain type of omelette and Equinox?

BTW, the Unreal 1995 Tech Demo page is done, so you can cross it off.

There's that Rez prototype for Dreamcast that was leaked a few years ago. K-Project I think it was called.

Also, the guy over at NES Player has been collecting prototypes, but unfortunately only a few ended up being different from the final release and other leaked prototypes. Just recently there was an article about a Japanese Goonies II prototype with a bunch of changes documented. Dunno if it's any different from the one already listed in this thread though.

There were three other unique ones: Batman Returns, Parodius, and TMNT2. I already covered TMNT2's lone difference on the wiki page. The other two have a bunch of changes in the code. Source: Skrybe in this thread.
