Not what I'm having precisely this moment (the most recent thing I ate was Honey Bunches of Oats), but the other day I got an assignment to shoot a still life from a top-down perspective in the studio. I chose to shoot a durian.

I never saw durians for sale in the East Coast, so I was a little surprised by the relative ease at which I was able to procure such a fruit. It was as simple as dropping by the local Vietnamese grocery chain.

For some reason, I decided to pick the largest specimen available. This made carrying this fruit a very interesting task and at one point the bag it was stored in gave way and the fruit fell and left a bunch of holes in my left hand. The entire time, I was also afraid that the fruit would thaw and release its notorious odor.

The shoot took over an hour. Afterwards, one of my classmates asked if she could stab the fruit. I said yes so she stabbed it. We cut the fruit open and ate it.

It was weird. It's fragrant for sure but not in a decomposing-and-covered-in-turpentine-alien-fetus way that the fruit is rumored to smell like. In fact, it's so hard to pin down the flavor that part of the fun in sharing the fruit was listening to everyone's own interpretation.

If you ask me, I say durian is most like a mixture of mango and banana with a very slight garlic undertone (but especially the spiciness of garlic). The texture is cold and slimy, reminiscent of raw chicken flesh. The unusual texture, they say, is what gets people.

I'm not sure if I'll ever eat durian again, but it's not really as crazy as everyone says it is.

Conaidering I've just woken up, I can only eat something simple at this time.

And I chose some wierd snacks I've never eaten before, since the last time I could have eaten packet of these it was just a present for someone else.

At least, said snacks are okay.

I've had frozen Durian before too.

Supposedly, it's the non-frozen durian that gets you, too... they say it's so bad it can permanently cause bad odor on curtains.

Today for lunch I had white rice, 3 fried eggs (runny yolk), and stewed chicken with carrots... It was surprisingly good. Now to wait another eternity for something else that's good in the cafeteria.

first lunch: Cool Ranch Doritos, Haribo Gold Bears, a red velvet cake donut

second lunch: four scrambled eggs with spinach, mushrooms, and too much cheddar jack

Sometimes you can tell the difference between me eating lunch at work vs. at home but not always

eh, I wish I could find more of that. This comes from a guy who has eaten that only once years ago when I was on holiday.

Anyway, I'm eating some gummy candies now. While I could have eaten the hard ones as well (as it's not like years ago when for some reason I did not like the hard candies at all), I prefer the soft ones.

Chocolate biscuits. Honestly, who doesn't like that?
Although they're not mine and I should not really eat them, but you know the drill about temptation.
I could also use the birthday as an excuse for eating them though.

oh my god this shit is good.

"dragon noodles"

lo mein noodles mixed with a sriracha-based sauce (sriracha, brown sugar and soy sauce), two eggs fried in a pan of melted butter and crushed red pepper, and some cilantro and chopped green onion to top it off.

I had it about 5 hours ago for dinner and put the rest away for tomorrow.

... I opened that container and just had the rest of it now. AND I'M NOT SATISFIED

I need to make more tomorrow. shit.

Today a friend of mine had me and my partner over for Christmas dinner. We went over around 3pm and enjoyed some earl grey tea and some stroopwafels. My friend has long told me about the proper way to consume these stroopwafels:
  1. place a stroopwafel on top a warm cup of tea or coffee
  2. wait until the steam warms the stroopwafel
  3. enjoy the stroopwafel

This was delicious and combined with my first experience with the Madeleine cookie (a cookie which you dip into hot tea) I've developed a fascination with teatime rituals. What can you do to augment your experience of this beverage? Tea is becoming an important part of my life—I've just purchased my fifth type of tea—so this is an important question to ask.

Either way, I love tea! Afternoon tea is part of my routine now.

You won't believe how many cakes I've eaten in the past few days. (read: four :|)

The one thing they all have in common (except one, but eh) is how they're chocolate-flavoured. And that's it. Nothing else is similar for some reason.
