Breakfast was a simple (leftover) brown rice pilaf with some sunny side up egg. The egg was seasoned with freshly ground white pepper thanks to this super grinder I found in the spices aisle of the Whole Foods in Cambridge. They had grains of paradise, too, which was really tempting, but I resisted. I love this new presentation because the white pepper doesn't leave visible little specks in the egg but it still adds a subtle pepper flavor. Oh, and yes, that's smoked paprika, sea salt and savory.
Instead of eating two eggs, I served the dish with a side salad of arugula sautéed in butter and seasoned with some sea salt and this ground peppercorn medley I had. I've never really had sautéed arugula before, but it turns out it's a lot like spinach with a more pleasant and complex flavor. I almost want to stop eating spinach so I can just eat arugula all the time. I love arugula.

Lunch today was cajun / creole at a restaurant in Indianapolis. It was chili cheese etouffee with crawfish and rice.
I love Indy now, just because of that place. ![]() |

I got some thin-sliced pork chops this morning so for lunch I made pork chops, pan-fried just to medium* and seasoned with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme and served with a side of arugula salad and a bowl of short-grain sweet brown rice. The PSRT spice combo is pretty new to me—yes, I did get it from a Simon and Garfunkel album—but it's pretty delicious all the same. It's pretty French, I think.
*Cook to 160°F? Get with the times. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, pork is totally okay at 145°F. That means you can enjoy your pork chops pink and juicy on the inside! -------------------- About the author: A prolific contributor to Jul with some 2408 posts published, Sofi better fancies herself as a cinema geek, a composer, a vintage gamer, a budding fashionita, an absolute cooking newbie and a general life enthusiast-satirist. Chopsticks in one hand and a chicken drumstick in the other was how I approached today's yummy lunch of French and Japanese fusion: my now totally famous-avec-mes-amis Provençal tempura chicken marinated in onions, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and olive oil served with a side of arugula and brown rice. I know, I know; this is probably my one millionth post about this style of chicken but I can't help it—the meat is so super succulent and juicy, the panko-crusted exterior so crunchy and flavorful.
Oh, and the rice is a sweet short-grain variety, a sticky gluten-free kind of rice that's favored in dishes such as sushi. Since the rice is sticky, it tends to create clumps that makes for way better chopstick handling than the totally lame un-sticky basamati brown rice variety I got from Costco and have to eat with a fucking spoon. It's probably my East Asian background speaking (that's what everyone said anyway) but rice is totally the best side to go with fried chicken. All in all, a pretty awesome lunch. Awesome lunches are of course why I love the weekend where I'm a bit more lax with my diet. I think my only problem was I may have prepared one drumstick too many. When I finally sat down to eat, I thought, "man, that is a lot of chicken". Not that I'm complaining.

Sunny-side up egg. Baked cajun home fries. Arugula.
I think my refrigerator may be way too cold. The temperature is set to like 38°F or something, which is pretty normal, but the egg was like totally frozen when I cracked it. I had to defrost it on my nonstick skillet. The cajun home fries were especially delicious, by the way. -------------------- About the author: A prolific contributor to Jul with some 2411 posts published, Sofi better fancies herself as a cinema geek, a composer, a vintage gamer, a budding fashionita, an absolute cooking newbie and a general life enthusiast-satirist. Shirred egg or œuf en cocotte lined at the bottom with arugula and topped with cheddar cheese, savory, ground white pepper, sea salt and smoked paprika. Served with strips of whole wheat toast.
I'm pretty sure I've found the best way to cook this tasty French morning treat. Bake at 425°F at the second rack from the top for 8 minutes and then broil for 3 minutes. It comes out pretty great. -------------------- About the author: A prolific contributor to Jul with some 2413 posts published, Sofi better fancies herself as a cinema geek, a composer, a vintage gamer, a budding fashionita, an absolute cooking newbie and a general life enthusiast-satirist.
