With rice it seems the more difficult it is to eat it, the more fun and tasty it becomes. Seriously, whenever you eat rice with a fork it's so much better than when you eat it with a spoon. This is obviously why it's customary to eat rice with chopsticks.
Tonight was fried egg, leftover brown rice and bacon. The egg was seasoned with soy sauce to give it this nice Asian flavor to it. This was literally all I'd eat when I'd visit my family in China because I didn't really like anything else. The meal was eaten with a fork for moderate food-goodness because the bowl doesn't suit chopsticks. When you decide to make your egg this way, you should use some sort of oil instead of butter. I used butter and now I wish I used olive oil or sunflower oil instead. -------------------- —Sofi |

Annie's brand macaroni and cheese from a box. Annie's is probably the best major brand there is out there and it's also organic. It's pretty neat stuff. I also added sour cream, parsley flakes, cayenne pepper and black pepper as a sort of experiment to flesh out the taste a bit more. I don't think I added enough to make it significantly different.
This was pretty enjoyable but I've kind of been troubled by the amount of money I've been spending on food lately. A lot of this is because I've been going out with friends but also I've been kind of indulgent on my own as well. I toured the different food markets in the area today, which included Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Shaw's and even a little farmer's market to survey the sort of stock all of these places have as well as their prices and quality. I'm loving the number of frugal alternatives available to me so I think I'll just take advantage of those and also just finish up whatever supply I have food available still (which means I'll be eating nothing but pasta for a while). Anyway, I always seem to go into food blog mode when I post in this topic. It's fun. -------------------- —Sofi |

My food budget is $100/month and it's working perfectly - I use far less than that and eat 3-4 times a day. ![]() Today I had white rice, beans, and two fried eggs again for lunch, and for dinner I just had rice and the rest of the beans left. -------------------- ![]() |

I make homemade mac and cheese from time to time and it's cool but it's the sort of thing I don't want to eat all the time. Instead I'll have a nice spaghetti dinner tonight. :9
Breakfast time is bacon-hash brown-milk-sunny side up egg time! The potato was a red potato which as it seems isn't really optimal for making hash browns. Yukon gold potatoes are loads better and also make a nicer-looking finished product. The eggs were fried in sunflower oil today instead of butter. The uncured bacon I got from Trader Joe's was fried over low heat instead of medium like I usually do. The strips are huge so only one was necessary and it's pretty cool since these have a ton less calories too if you're like totally into that whole calorie counting thing. The bacon itself was pretty great with a nice texture and a delicate smoky flavor. ![]() Click to enlarge. Overall I'm totally satisfied I bought this cheaper brand than the one I usually get. I have to walk for like fifteen minutes into the city to get this but it's totally worth it. I mean who wouldn't walk just fifteen minutes for bacon? -------------------- —Sofi |

If there's anything that I learned from lunch today, it's how unrelentingly greasy my homemade burger attempts end up. This is probably the fourth or fifth burger I've made only this time I also made bacon first and then fried the patty in the bacon grease. Then once it was done I basted the patty in the grease again. I had a kosher pickle spear and potato wedges on the side.
The meal was delicious but also guilt-inspiring. I only have one more patty left and I'll probably eat that next week. Otherwise I think my burger cravings have been all but satiated for good. I'm kinda having idle considerations of going vegetarian for a while. I could go like totally carbivore at the expense of making the graphic tee I'm getting not so ironic anymore. -------------------- —Sofi |

| Oh I could never be a vegetarian ... maybe an ovo-lacto-vegetarian with some effort ... but probably not. As for today, I had Chinese rice (really just normal rice with soy sauce as I couldn't fry it), chow mein with teriyaki sauce, three fried eggs that I sliced into tiny pieces, then I mixed everything and kept pouring soy sauce. ![]() Delicious! ![]() -------------------- ![]() |

People usually mean ovo-lacto vegetarian when they say "vegetarian".
Breakfast was hash browns, sunny side up eggs, baby portobello mushroom caps and Morningstar's vegetarian sausages. The sausages are passable, not great, and something about their texture feels weird. There's no casing so if you move it the wrong way, chunks of it fall out. Halfway through biting into one I'm suddenly reminded of soy which is probably not a good thing to be reminded of when it comes to veggie sausages. I have minor allergies to soy (I know, my parents thought I was just irrationally hating it too and kept trying to feed me tofu as a kid) and while most of the time I'm totally okay with eating products with trace amounts of soy, products that have a lot more of are not so cool. And I think this totally exceeds my soy tolerance or maybe I am having random tongue and lip inflammation and it has nothing to do with anything else. I should totally just say "fuck breakfast sausages". I'm going back to sleep. Related: http://dieselsweeties.com/archive.php?s=1361 -------------------- —Sofi |
