Super Mario Bros. scrolled from right to left and had rockets! SM64 had a few more actions planned for it.

I got amused at that rocket thing and wondered how they would've pulled off such a concept back then.

Yeah, I wonder if that concept got as far as any sort of implementation or if it was scrapped in the planning stages. Seeing a screenshot would be priceless!

As I said on IRC, thank god they decided against putting jump on the up direction...

Mario will run from the left to the right. When he reaches the place where the scrolling starts, he will stop. Then the speed scrolling will begin. As he decelerates, the scrolling will slow, and Mario will begin walking to the left with the standstill. The scrolling won’t continue to the right, and Mario will have no choice but to return to the left side of the screen.

I'm trying to parse this- is this just a roundabout way of describing normal scrolling, or is it talking about something more like an auto-scrolling level?

Judging just from that translation, I'd think it's describing how it is now; when Mario goes forward, the screen goes with him, then when he slows down and stops, the screen will scroll until he's at the left and then stop.

Alternately, it could like Zelda 1, where you would walk to the edge of the screen and have it scroll one screen forward and then stop.

I get the feeling "rockets" was supposed to describe the fireballs (maybe once actual rockets), really... but having Mario actually fly around on rockets would be pretty insane.

The rockets sound a lot like the Booster from Cave Story, I think. Which would have been awesome.
