| Well, it really depends on how big of a picture you're looking at.
Taking everything into account, then, yes, our existence is probably meaningless. However, this is not a very practical philosophy, as the only things that it does not render meaningless by extension are mostly unknowns, and it is not without its own presumptions. Therefore, you're better off focusing on worldly matters. Looking at the human species, we are obviously very social creatures. As such, we do much better as a species when we cooperate and avoid things like killing each other too often; those who had the ability to work together and suppress their urges to murder often wound up surviving longer than those who did not. Over time, these traits became what we now refer to as morals, and they still serve a vital role in our survival as a whole. The closest thing to a purpose that any given species has is, in fact, to survive, so abiding by these social guidelines should certainly be part of this purpose. Anyway, the definition of a moral nihilist is "a person who rejects all moral principles," so on the grounds that morality is essential to the survival of our species, I am willing to say that being one is "something bad," but unless this has actually driven you to become antisocial, I wouldn't really be concerned about it. |
