Some stuff from a message hidden in the MSX version of Hydlide. Found on this page found in that 2ch thread posted a while back. What's this site called anyway? I dunno what to source it as.

Those who were able to decipher the code, please notify Kato of T&E Soft. However, please decipher the meaning of all the bits.

Would we consider this to be the top page? http://www.ca.sakura.ne.jp/~sakura/babobi/

Note that the text above is taken a little out of context, so that last line about the bike may change a tiny bit:

MY BIKE IS '
KAWASAKI
GPZ400R
NO. 2739
(YAPPARI BIKE WA
HAYAI !!)

...to "(My/this) bike (sure/really) is fast!!"

Sure. Your version is geared more toward bikes in general. The author could've been referring just to a specific bike.

We should likely go ahead leave out the names above the title, right?

Up to you! The names are Kaikawa, Babobi, and Chiba if you want to include them.

The dude's referring to bikes in general. =)

I'm not sure about that. Given the context - Eiji already described his car (model number, serial?), with an additional comment (that you translated above), and did the same for his motorcycle - I thought it was reasonable to assume he's probably bragging about his motorcycle, somewhat like his comment about the car.

Here's the entire message, copied from the above-linked page for anyone who didn't feel like following the link.

Actually, using the names or not is probably rabidabid's call.

Had the dude wanted to talk about his bike in particular, he would have used 俺の and が. は is used comparatively, so the sentence carries the connotation "Bikes (in comparison to other things) are fast." が is used to refer to something specifically and put an emphasis on it, while の decrees ownership. 「俺のバイクが早い」 would translate to "MY bike is fast." As it is, the sentence is talking about bikes in a general sense.

I double-checked with a native speaker who confirmed the above.

S40 = Showa 40 = 1965, for anyone not familiar with the Japanese dating system.

Sorry, the "we" made me think you were in charge of the decision as well.

Can we do the 'agree to disagree' thing, then?

It's informal speaking/writing, though. I've known native speakers who 'simplify' (=drop words/particles) down to levels like that while speaking informally, even while gesturing to a specific object. And, I see examples of it every now and then in the media (yes, admittedly manga/animation; I don't watch regular Japanese television shows all that often, mostly because the digital TV transition essentially took away the only Japanese-programming channel I could pick up. ). It probably depends upon the speaker.

Look, I'm not trying to be unkind or stubborn, but my explanation holds. I'm well aware of the habit of speakers to drop words from their sentences, but doing so in this case would change the meaning from what you presume he intended, making it seem an odd choice.

All I can say is that I have 2 years of living in Japan, 5 years of translation, 6 years of focused grammar study, and the confirmation of a native speaker (who also took a look at the context) behind what I said. If you still want to agree to disagree, we'll leave it at that.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned the 'agree to disagree' part; I certainly don't consider myself any sort of expert in Japanese, and if rabidabid does post the message with translation on TCRF, whatever translation rabidabid chooses to include, I won't complain.

My attempt, from top to bottom:
立つ時はねこぜ - "standing time is stupid" (Not sure how to parse, "while standing he's stupid" perhaps?)
しっぽ - "tail"
Z?のくもどり - "Shading of the Z?" (I can't read the character next to the Z)

Hmm, interesting. I think I know where the first image would have gone. There's a function called "Compose" that lets you combine pictures. In there, there's the "Split" option which lets you copy the four corners of any picture and combine them into one picture. Then there's the "Fusion" option which lets you fuse two pictures together, so they're kind of overlapping each other. Anyway, that graphic fits perfectly into the preview box. Here's a quick mockup:

I guess at one point they didn't allow you to fuse the same picture (since it just creates a copy of the same picture) but then changed their minds? Or maybe it was a bug that got fixed?

As for the second pic, I have no idea. The middle two tiles appear later with the Hot Spot graphics but I dunno if they're related or just filler.

Ah, you're right! Should be "Have". Wrong radical, sorry. :/

Unless I'm mistaken, there is something written on one of Marowak's textures in Pokemon Stadium/2. It's faint, and could be a coincidence/nothing, but looks a bit too clean to be random scratchings.

But if it is nothing, I apologize for the false alarm.
