It's amazing how much still usable / consumable stuff people throw away.

Back when I was in a boarding school, we used to raid the local dumpster weekly. There was a market nearby and they kept on throwing away all sorts of food items, that were going to turn old in a day or two. Bread, meat, fruits, you name it. There even was a whole bunch of apples, which were thrown away because there was a single bad apple in the bag they were in.

Once, to retrieve homework that I accidentally threw away into a paper recycling dumpster with stuff that I meant to throw away in the first place.

I pretty much had to use my bike seat to get in and out of the only entrance into the dumpster.

Nope.

I find trash gross and I don't like touching it (although touching my own trash, I don't have the same problem with) so I wouldn't Dumpster dive.

I used to look all around on the ground at school to find pens, markers, money, and even some crazy stuff like pencil cases full of stuff, unused notebooks, and blank video tapes, along with other stuff that I can't even remember. My drawer is filled with dozens of rulers that I found in public school alone. (With respect to people throwing away usable stuff.)

But no, I have not had to dive into any dumpsters. The stuff would usually dive at me.

Touching trash isn't that bad. Whenever I'm scouring through dumpsters, I'm wearing gloves and most of the stuff that is usable is easy to find.

You can make a fortune in Finland by collecting bottles from trash. People are too lazy to return them, so you'll find tons of bottles in the garbage. I also like checking the paper dumpster if anyone has thrown any interesting books or magazines in. I did find a pile of Donald Ducks once.

I don't go dumpster diving per se, but I do find myself stopping while going down the road if I see something big and somewhat usable laying on the curb.

I got my bike and my desktop computer that way.

I picked up both the TVs we use today by carting them off from the curb.

We've found a desk that way.
Other than that, no dumpster diving here.

When I was a kid, there was this old, fake refrigerator cabinet thing at the dump that was still pretty good aside from a minorly broken door. We nabbed it, fixed it up, and it got to be my video game cabinet for a good while.

Taking furniture that someone left on the curb seems a little different than actively going into a dumpster... I could see myself doing the former if something looked worthwhile, while the latter would be a bit more problematic.

But in reality I can't think of any situations where I've ended up doing either...

My roommate and I grabbed a tall mirror in a frame that was sitting by the trash. All it needed was duct tape on back to hold the mirror in the frame! Perfectly good, sits in our living room now.

Same here, when taking out the trash I like to extend my hand as far away from my clothes as possible. xP

Haven't actually gotten anything this way, but I certainly have looked around to see if I could pick anything up.

No luck.

The end of the school year at colleges is a magnificent time to dumpster-dive, since everyone's throwing stuff out. I've been able to pick up quite a bit of stuff over the past few years, including a functional laptop with a non-functional screen.

It's a server now.

This. Got a free couch once (the removal from the dumpster process was hilarious), a red pimp hat, and a Sonic the Hedgehog plush.

Oh no no no. Especially not here...

Even if I did, I wouldn't dive during the summer. We have a TON of bees around our garbage.

I give Value Village's dumpster a good looking through every once and a while (you wouldn't believe the number of awesome things that some thrift stores throw out, unfortunately since the people who price the items have no idea what anything is, one of two things can happen: 1-You get extremely good deals on things because the pricer doesn't know what it's worth, or unfortunately... 2-Good things get thrown out because the pricer doesn't know what they are and because they don't think it's worth putting out for sale apparently that means that it's as good as trash). But anyways, once day I was looking through their dumpster and I found an Atari 5200 with two controllers and a Pacman cartridge...let's just say that it should have stayed in the dumpster .

Our stereo came from the trash.

It works perfectly fine to this date, despite being around 20-25 years old. (It has one of the first CD players ever invented) Sadly, the 20 year warranty expired by now (and the company went bankrupt).
