I've got some other stuff to take care of this weekend so I posted my notes thus far for Dark Wizard. It's mostly shorthand but a savestate is included for download that's seen Armer and Marie's spell lists hacked to include the glitchy spells I've been testing.

I don't remember an M SYSTEM or ZILLION in Phantasy Star... they don't seem to do anything, though.

Zillion seems to be a reference to another Master System game by that name...

And "M System" is probably a reference to the Master System itself.

Ie, sounds like they're both in-jokes.

Of course, this game also has a character who says "DO YOU LIKE SEGA GAMES?", so maybe this is a cut subquest to get her some?

I also remember from XCult that guy who runs it posted something about finding some actual text for Chameleon in the Genesis version of the game.

What I think would be interesting is to dig around in the game a lot more to see if there's things that are half-implemented, left in there, or whatever. I'm curious because the SNES/Genesis versions were rushed. I mean, if forgetting to fully dummy out a removed character isn't rushed, I dunno what is.

So yeah, any takers mayhaps?

Some weird stuff mixed in with the Faxanadu items: An orb, a lantern, some kind of crystal, and a book. I don't recall seeing these things anywhere in the game...

Sega games of that era seemed to have a thing about referencing other Sega games. Well, at least the English versions did. In Phantasy Star 4 the book shelves in the Krup school house have references to Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Ecco the Dolphin. In Shining Force 2 one of the options that can be randomly chosen for a character hit by Muddle 2 is "{NAME} is playing Game Gear. Shining Force GG is a great game!"

The crystal looks like Troy from Out of This World.

Only one of those sprites that looks remotely similar to something in the game is the Orb; might have become the Black Onyx in the final version.

Yeah, it's possible. I saw the Black Onyx there as well, though, so...

Serpent Isle has a ton of dev commentary and leaked production material that provides context for unused things, so much that it would flood the page to add it! I think a namespace would be useful.

GlitterBerri- Sent you a PM about the Zelda stuff.

I worked some more on Dark Wizard. The game actually has a goat character for battle scenes that it doesn't use.

It has no attack animation so eventually attacking or casting a spell will crash the game. The defensive animation is complete and works just fine. The sprites pulled are determined by class so there's no way this could have worked with the way the game is currently programmed. The goat class has a fully functioning walk cycle (also unused because polymorphed characters stop moving and even going frame by frame when the computer moves them their sprites didn't appear to change) and cannot gain levels because the experience required per level is 0.

I did decipher a character table for one set of text. It doesn't help much except in viewing character names and decompressed town talk* but its... uh, something? The notes entry linked above has been updated to include all this stuff.

I also horsed around with PAR codes in PS4. I got a warp code partially functioning based on information from the debug menu. I say partially because the game may set Y scroll to 0 or warp into a wall or warp point from which there is no escape. It's FFEC29:##. For example FFEC29:10 warps to Piata and FFEC29:02 warps to the Rykros overworld. You must initiate a screen transition (like walking out of a town) to trigger the warp.

An oddity in Zelda OoT I just noticed, wondering if it's something for the Wiki... Near the end of the escape from Ganon's Castle as it collapses, in the second to last room - a modified version of the initial barrier room, where you had to clear the mini-temples - you cross a short bridge with a lone Redead on it. Off in the distance you can see some of the mini-temple doors... only that there aren't any actual doors:

Now, if you let Zelda open the gate to the next room, and from there - using the MQ Debug ROM's free movement mode - navigate through the walls, outside of the room, making sure you don't accidentally make the game reload the last one... you'll be able to find the missing doors, just floating in the void!

The thing is, the designers apparently messed up. Those doors aren't real doors in the interactive sense, like most other doors in the game, but simply static, decorative elements that are part of the room's geometry. However, those decorative doors were accidentally put into the second room, where they cannot be seen since they're just floating outside, instead of the first room, where they would've perfectly filled the empty doorframes.

Comparison screenshots, same camera position:

Man, what is it with games and unused goats lately?

Little Ninja Brothers has a crapload more regional differences than what I've posted to the wiki, which I could tell by looking at both ROMs in YY-CHR, but I'd have to simultaneously play through both games to catch and document all of them. I'll put it on my "to-do" list, but I don't have the time to dedicate to that right now. I just grabbed what was easy to grab from the beginning to get things started.

I'll toss in a (more recent) memory of my own, where in Mega Man X, I managed to bump the SNES at some point just before the Vile battle in Sigma Fortress A, which ended up blanking the screen save for a set of GFX that was pasted in the center of the screen all in an even palette (X's, to be precise). Dunno if it was just random debug function or some actual sort of viewer, but the game hung after that, just displaying the raw graphics tilemap.

I vaguely remember a Zelda I save file in which the arrows could be shot without having the bow, but they looked different, more like spears. I'm not even sure anymore if it was a dream or me misremembering.

It could have been some Game Genie thing, as I tended to experiment with different codes and apparently using different GG codes can make the save files weird.
