Appears I've found a Pokemon Crystal revision difference. In "unused" content no less.
English 1.1 messed up the background image for Mobile Stadium (disabled outside Japan), as with non-English European versions. Compare using Gameshark code 010576CF. Edit: Better code enables both Mobile and Mobile stadium. Googling it had interestingly off-topic results, let's just say... |

In the so called "special edition" of Tonic Trouble (did anyone else play this?) there's clearly an empty region on the world map, as such:
Normally, this would be the end of it, but turns out, there's actually a missing stage that's programmed to appear there! If you go to 00D42C4E and change FFFF to 0000, the secret is revealed:
Unfortunately, the actual model used is only a placeholder. It's just a narrow pyramid poking through a white quad.
It's programmed to display a total of 0 items, and given its position in the map, it would seem like it was intended to be an early stage, perhaps before you free the Doc. Then again, the Doc clearly states that the only way to defeat Grögh is to "send you flying directly into the city", and there's nothing resembling a city in the game. |

| IIRC "coffee breaks" were common in arcade games at the time Space Invaders was originally released; I'm not sure if Space Invaders itself has one, but eh |

So created a page for Nightmare Circus on the Genesis after finding a playthrough on youtube, and found some interesting bits on the guy's playthrough comments:
THELASTLAUGH and TOTALCONTROL are definitely related to the debug options. BLOODTHIRSTY has the player spurt blood when his, while FASHIONSENSE breaks the game's color palette. The last one is most interesting though, as the game doesn't seem to register it even though it's in the same lineup as the rest. Anyone up for taking a gander? |

Originally posted by devin Yep, both with it short at the beginning and at the end, and cycling through the letters for the remaining slot afterwards to see if any made it valid (with this game at least, if you do set up a correct password it'll show the password on the screen below it). EDIT: Did a little more looking into it. The passwords are stored in a plain text format within the rom, and can be modified (changing SPIRITSHADOW to SPIRITSHADOA will cause the game to look for that one instead). I tried changing the space to an A (and it does seem to be a space, chr 20), and still no go: the game doesn't seem to check for this password any longer. |

| I'll take a look later and see what the password check code is doing. I wonder if there's an off-by-one error that's causing this last password not to be checked... (assuming it is the last password in the ROM) |

| I recall hearing that the password is indeed not used in the game. In fact, I recall having heard rumors that the game actually wasn't finished and was released as-is (which explains why it's so horribly unbalanced and such), so I wouldn't be surprised if what happened is that they didn't even get around implementing the password in the first place.
That would also mean that there should be lots of leftover stuff in the ROM... |
