There's a unused screen in Donkey Kong Country with a message about a Game Modifier.
It was found by corrupting the rom. It's in this video at 5:44 mark:

That reminds me of a warning screen that I came across many years ago after I beat the first factory level in DKC. I suppose that there's a chance that it was the same one although I'm pretty sure that the one that I saw was related to piracy (similar to the warning message that's in SMAS), I was really young at the time so I wasn't a great reader and my memory of it is quite foggy.

Just figured I'd throw this out there in case anyone wanted to investigate it further (not that anything that I said would probably be a lot of help ).

Seeing those error messages from Super Mario All Stars jogged my memory about an error message I saw when I was younger (I think about the same font as those error messages) telling me to insert a cartridge or game pack or something. This was about 5 years ago so just like Higsby I thought I will throw this out there in case anyone wanted to investigate it further.

The only warning screens in SMAS are the ones you see on the wiki. There's nothing to investigate, unless I missed some while scanning the ROM (highly unlikely).

I think they're talking about Donkey Kong Country, chief.

It must of been the European version I got then, I swear the error message was different though,

I remember getting one on Tetris Attack when the cart kinda jolted though. I don't think we have that one up yet on the wiki.

...Actually, Tetris Attack would be a good game to look for stuff in. *Jots that down for later*

I believe I've finally reconstructed the entire background for some screens in Zio's Tower and Ladea Tower for Phantasy Star 4. The tilemap used in Ladea Tower is simply wrong and omits part of the image resulting in a background that doesn't tile smoothly like it should. I had to pull it from memory from the walkway in Zio's Tower and fiddle with it in Photoshop because there doesn't seem to be any point where the whole thing is laid out without wrapping around.

While going through old savestates practicing sprite and tile reconstruction in GSavestate I loaded up a state next to Miles at the end of the game.

I hadn't thought to wander into either blocked off building before using the debug menu so I went ahead and peeked inside. The buildings with closed doors have no teleports to other maps but the item shop and this house do. The item shop is unchanged and still works.

There are more dead people inside - a duplicate of the old man blocking the door outside. When you try to talk to either of them the game doesn't use the line all the other corpses has and instead produces the following glitch:

Walking through the glitched mess makes the game lag horribly.

I probably should replay this game before making a post like this, but if there's any chance at all anyone else has played it, maybe they could comment on it...

I found some stuff in NES Might & Magic that I don't remember...

The amorphous shackled being is definitely used, but I don't recall seeing any of the others. For that matter, I don't recall any character art that looked so obviously anime/manga in style.

Right below those guys are this headbanded dude and elf that I also don't recognize. Maybe they're used and I've just forgotten them, but they rather look like they could have been intended as character portraits for the various races/classes you can recruit into your party.

Is the dude in the lower left used? Where is there a library in that game? And once again, very anime/manga-styled. The sword looks like it should be used, but I can't remember where it appears...

The freaky-looking wizard in the upper right isn't familiar to me, but it's possible I just don't remember him. However, the tree in the lower left is especially questionable. I don't recall any trees so important that they got their own portrait. And it looks like it's sparkling.

Filler. Lots of games seem to use smiley faces as filler graphics, I've found.

Also, so far two other people I know who have played NES Might & Magic have both told me those manga-style character portraits are unfamiliar.

Huge Blaster Master haul...

The wiki already has the Spike Weapon mentioned, but none of this stuff:

The Moai Head at the top doesn't seem to be used anywhere.

Some sort of turret enemy that would stand up on stilt-like legs. To the left of him is another turret/tower thing that's not used in Blaster Master, but my resident Blaster Master expert says it got used for the engine upgrade in Enemy Below. Below that is another unused enemy with a side-mounted cannon.

Those miniature versions of Sophia's upgrades aren't used. Text was used on the menu screen to show the weapons/upgrades, instead. Also, there's something weird between the "Select Weapon" text and Jason's outline. It seems like it lines up with Sophia's outline, somewhat, and was probably going to be used to show the cockpit open.

Neither me nor my resident Blaster Master expert recognize the knight-like enemy on the bottom of this rip. However, this website shows it on a sprite sheet. We're not sure how he got them, though. Maybe he ripped them from the ROM, or maybe there's a way to get it to show up somewhere...but if it is used, it must only be able to move forward. No sprites for facing left, right, or up.

The guy at the bottom with the outstretched hand isn't used, as far as we know. Also, there's a weird turret with a beak-like orifice between the lightning bolt and the Level 5 fish-like enemy that I don't recognize.

More!

The Plutonium Boss appears to have graphics for an unused drill/cone that it probably would have spit at you to prevent you from staying directly in front of its face for too long.

Likewise, the final boss seems to have an unused attack, too - that spiral laser at the top.

The E-capsule near Jason on the left doesn't seem to be used.

On the bottom right, in with the ending graphics, are three tiny little Sophias of descending size. The camera was probably supposed to pan out, but Sophia is seen from behind in the ending and these sprites were drawn from a front view. Oops.

Alas, I didn't find what I had been hoping to find - evidence that Jason once had the ability to jump in the overhead areas - but I didn't expect to find this much, either.

This is almost as much as that Flintstones game...

EDIT - Totally missed this earlier, but the final boss looks like he would have shot the laser from his left hand after losing the shield. There's an unused animation of him pulling his arm back and putting his palm forward that my resident Blaster Master expert, CodieKitty, pointed out. I always though the loss of his shield was just to let the player know he was taking damage and almost done. But it looks like originally he was supposed to lose it to go into "Phase 2" of his attack. Instead, he just stays in "Phase 1".

According to a Blaster Master guide that CodieKitty has, the knight enemy appears in one of the Level 6 ice dungeons. That might explain why I've never seen it. I know how to get right to the boss on that stage and have probably never fully-explored it.

Someone with better hacking skills than me should probably check into this game a little more thoroughly - find out if any of these enemies are fully-functional and if those two unused final boss attacks can be activated.

I thought I'd take a look at Section-Z to see if it had any Capcom smilies...

Section Z also contains a large portion of the FDS BIOS at the very end of the ROM (look for the 1bpp font), as it was originally an FDS game. I'm assuming the developers got lazy and didn't want to rewrite all the old FDS-specific routines. I wonder if they got Nintendo's permission to do this?

I was looking through some more Capcom NES games. Admittedly, I've never really put much time into Bionic Commando and my memory of Strider isn't very reliable, but I thought I'd at least recognize an out-of-place happy face if I saw one... Didn't find any, but both games have a tile that says "Do not use".

Yes the knight enemy in Blaster Master is used. He is an extremely rare enemy that as far as I know only appears in one place in the game.

He's in this room in area 6.

He comes running in from the top of the screen and just keeps going downward until he leaves the screen. He also moves fairly quickly. He doesn't always seem to show up though. I've found the best way to get him to appear, is to just keep moving up in that room and to avoid killing enemies.

As far as the other stuff you spotted, I've never seen any of it.
