(I guess this is as good a place for a 2500th post as any)

The SNES version of Princess Minerva, some obscure Vic Tokai RPG, uses "FUCK" and "SEX!" as SRAM init strings. In particular, $082a is set to 01 when the latter is found in the last 4 bytes of SRAM, but I have no clue what that actually does

I found this in DKC2 while HEX Coding:

Offest: 000083C0 52 61 72 65 77 61 72 65 41 20 74 68 69 65 66 21 RarewareA thief!

I'm not sure about this, just seems something odd. I played this game a lot of times... but I don't remember that.
Maybe an placeholder for testing "Anti-Piracy"?

Reminds me of the "Stolen from Apple!" message that you could make show up on older Mac computers (circa 1984) in the built-in debugger. Forget what the address for the code to run it is, though.

Hey, maybe we should have a section on the wiki for hidden things in computer ROMs as well! Apple loved hiding stuff like that in ROMs.

I just made an joke. Jeesh.
And yes, you can find stuff with "source" options in every browser.

I like how not a single one of the articles I've read in the last several days has correctly attributed the discovery. They all quote the same bullshit source about how it was discovered on reddit.

That was posted three days after the article was made.

Bra-fucking-vo, team. Do your research.

I randomly decided to tackle the sound files for Bowser's Inside Story. I documented everything in the music and sound effects, but for whatever reason, VGMTrans can't read the Voice clips. There are claims that there are unused clips from Partners in Time and Yoshi's Story(!?) in there, but considering this is coming from MarioWiki, who knows how true it is. My guess is the "Yoshi's Story" sound clips are just Yoshi's voices from Partners in Time. Would someone with better knowledge of DS games and better tools like to take a stab at it? There's also an interesting DUMMY item that needs to be documented.

The Counterstrike: Global Ops beta has some weird stuff from, of all things, the Half Life 2 beta in it.

There's config files to handle playing the E3 demo recordings, and two demo files (bump3 and devtest) which no longer work (though viewing them in notepad shows references to files from the HL2 beta like the fire extingusher and bullsquid)

Valve's development SVN must be a hellish nightmare from which no light escapes.

Probably HL2 was the main branch, and they just branched off that code to make CS, and didn't remove all the HL2 resources. Rare has done the same - resources from Diddy Kong Racing are left, unused, in Jet Force Gemini (as well as an entire level recycled from it ), and the same basic engine test level exists in both those and Mickey Speedway USA.

(also someone needs to get screenshots of that and put it on the wiki I only saw it in a youtube video)

I can accept that... Except the HL2 beta was 2003-ish and CS:GO is still under development right now!

Maybe someone was a little indiscriminate with pulling HL2 assets out of the archives for use in CS:GO (valve do love their prop recycling), but that doesn't really explain how demo recordings and config scripts got there...

I found the Yoshi voice clips with Tinke. The lower quality ones are from Yoshi's Story, and the high quality voice clips are from Partners in Time.

Almost every game with Yoshi in it past N64 used those same voice clips. Are you sure that they are from Yoshi's Story, and not, say, Yoshi Touch & Go or Yoshi's Island DS?

This thing?

(I hope that's actually how the item works; the original description was very badly written, IIRC, and I rewrote it as best I could without having seen the item in action myself.)

Oh, how'd I miss that?

Though, it could use a little more documentation. It's called DUMMY in the international releases, but what is it called in the Japanese version? Does it have a significant position in the item list? Are there any other items?

...and don't forget, anyone with access to the Japanese version would be able to see what all of the debug menu entries actually are, without the English version's renaming everything to "no need to translate." (Bleah.)

So I was watching a Japanese Mario RPG cheat video, and apparently that "Go, World!!" line that shows up in odd circumstances is "The monster is taunting!" ("Monsutaa wa chouhatsu shiteiru!") in the Japanese version. Sounds like it might have been something that was actually intended to be used at some point.
