Interesting. Maybe that's where that unused line of bonus game text about "playing 3 times" figures in.

I can also see why they might have taken it out. If I'm reading it correctly, and with the "three times play" comment, it probably made it way too easy to complete the board or something...?

I probably should not speculate when I'm just getting off from work. :|

Was just poking around this website and found the following:

Pokémon RGBY:

"When you glitch items by using the select bug in RGBY, a variety of buggy items appear. Among them are the badges the gym leaders carry and Safari Balls, all of which have descriptions in Pokémon Stadium. There are also many types of badges that don't exist, such as the Falcon Badge, Rose Badge, Ojizou Badge, Cool Badge, Friend Badge, Shell Badge, Fireball Badge, Thunder Badge, and Gold Badge."

If anyone can think up a way to put these glitchy items into the inventory of their GB game and then try to view their descriptions using Pokémon Stadium, we might learn something cool. I'm not sure whether it's possible without a Japanese version of the original Pokémon Stadium (not the NA release that had all 151 Pokémon) and a Japanese copy of Red/Green, however.

Unfortunately, though I own the Japanese Pokémon Stadium, I only have an English version Pokémon Blue and no GB -> N64 connection accessory. Would it be possible to accomplish this through emulators or hacking?

Looking through Brütal Legend's files, I found two videos that displayed test maps (used for map selection in multiplayer, assumingly, so they're just still frames). There's a lot of references to debug utilities, as well as these (or other) test maps in the text files strewn about. There's also reference to using XBCD to control the game on a dev machine.

The meat of the game is contained in ".~p" files with accompanying ".~h" files (~h files have file paths for stuff to load). However, I have no idea how to open them.

EDIT: There's also videos that play that highlight each faction. however, I don't know where they're played. Either way, Ironheade, Drowning Doom, and the Coil have one. However, there's a third for Lionwhyte's faction. I haven't really delved into multiplayer, but I assumed they're played there, and Lionwhyte isn't playable.

Eh? Either that Japanese site is wrong or I'm doing something wrong:

Those are ????? (the "surfboard"), Safari Ball, Pokedex/Zukan, the normal badges (Boulder/Gray to Earth/Green Badge), and finally Kaminari, Kaigara, Ojizou, Hayabusa, Hinyari, Nakayoshi, Bara, Hinotama and Gold Badge. Out of those, in the original Japanese Stadium and Stadium 2, only the Safari Ball has a description, as seen in the first screenshot, while for everything else the description is just blank. In addition, the unused badges, as well as ex. the floors (B2F, B1F, 1F, etc.) and the other entries beyond the unused badges (Egg, etc.), do not have names and only show as ?????.

In Red (and I assume at least Green), your inventory starts at 0xD2A1 in memory, with the amount of items you're currently carrying, after which from 0xD2A2 to presumably 0xD2CB follow the actual items. It's two bytes per item, the first being the item's ID, the second how many of it you have (for potions, etc). The list must be terminated with an item of ID 0xFF, otherwise the game won't display the "cancel" option at the end of the list and instead keep reading the next few bytes as (unselectable) items.

Also, N-Rage's Input Plugin V2 v1.82 and higher supports Transfer Pak emulation, or at least enough for most of the Pokemon Stadiums to work with - the GB Tower gives an error message, telling you to turn off the power.

You're awesome, xdan! I've actually messaged the author of the site about it as well, so we'll see if they're able to shed any further light on the situation. Thank you very much for checking, I can rest eas(ier) now.

Not sure if you already know about this, but here's a brief explanation of what the unused items/ invalid items are which I added on to Bulbapedia last month.

I also came across the page you found (and several others, just by typing the unused strings from IIMarckus' Pokémon Red and Blue disassembly on Google), but I didn't bother trying to interpret what it says because I can't understand Japanese. It's interesting they say they all have descriptions on Pocket Monsters Stadium, maybe the author made a mistake and knew the Safari Ball had a description so wrongly assumed that the other items, and "items" do.

@xdaniel:

Did you check the original Pocket Monsters Stadium (where only 42 Pokémon are selectable), or the Japanese Pocket Monsters Stadium II (with working animations for all 151 Pokémon)?

The person from Nulog said they'd make a video for me and would get back to me when they finished, so I'll not say anything and hope that they know something we don't and aren't mistaken about the rest of the objects having more to them.

As for the TMs being listed as items, I found it interesting that in this video, the glitch Pokémon used by your rival once you screw with the game to take all 3 starter Pokémon before your first battle with him uses several TM moves as attacks. Just the game grabbing random data to use as attack names? Or does it point towards attacks once being called TM03 and such?

The HMxx and TMxx moves are known glitch attacks (ranging from index number C4-FF). I don't think those names as attacks are valid. As expected, there are "HM01" to "HM05", but the TMxx strings extend up to TM55. There are actually some pretty cool TM moves (they all have invalid effects) which use unused effects like +2 evasiveness. The other glitch attacks have inconsistent names/effects, and can throw things out like "(PLAYER) used GARY!""

The item index numbers (you can change 0xD2A2 in Red/Green to change the first item) for the HM and TMs are the same (C4-FF), with TM51-55 acting like HMs (though I've heard that the numbers in TMxx are just generated by the game anyway).

Both of them; I haven't tried this with Stadium G/S or any of the western versions, although I can't imagine them having names and descriptions while the first Japanese games don't.

Just posted this on the wiki, but it bears adding here - the new Syndicate game has a little present in the install files for people who remember how cracked games were packaged back in the day.

I recall hearing that one of those glitch items would give all badges when used. If so, sounds like some kind of debugging function...

Whenever you get your emulator into a usable state, you should totally see if items like the 'surfboard' and such actually use special code or if they're just funny bugs
