Strange hidden programmer's message in Equinox's menu graphics:

Ste and John are certainly Ste Pickford and John Pickford of Software Creations, the game's developer, but what does "were eve ok" mean?

Edit: Might actually be "were 'ere" (Ste & John were here, ok).

My first thought was "here" with a missing "h", so yes, it's probably that.

Yeah, I've mistook r's for v's sometimes too.

My own r's omit the stem, they're more like the IPA ɾ.

...ha. And here I thought I was the only one who did that.

The message was removed from the Japanese version, possibly because the letters/symbols for the Japanese dialogue took up the space where it was.

Heh, I love silly hidden greetings like this.

This reminds me of the ASCII message "GRAEME DEVINE AND DAN CHANG WHERE HERE" hidden in Spot for the NES. An acquaintance of mine actually talked to one of the two (Graeme, I think) and told them I had found this message. They were rather impressed.

Was it the same "Graeme" as "Graeme Norgate", the game music composer?

I found the Pickford brothers' website and they have a whole section devoted to Equinox (as well as sections for their many other games). Maybe I should tell them I found their secret.

Some more stuff from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I need some confirmation on a couple of these...

I found one unused animation frame of the duck already, but this one doesn't seem to be used, either.

This "enemy" is found in the Desert Palace. In one room, they move vertically up and down the left and right walls and shoot cannonballs. However, I can't recall anyplace in the game (and certainly nowhere in that dungeon) where they are attached horizontally to any walls. Maybe there is some place and I'm just not remembering it?

Uh... I don't recall those small and large "meat" sprites. At first I thought it looked like the Enemy Bait from the first Zelda game, but since there are large and small kinds and they are stored with the large and small magic refill decanters, it's more likely that they were meant to restore health...

Those meat sprites are definitely never used. I've played that game more times than I can count, and I've also done a full rip of the game's item icons (I collect those things for use in games I make, and other projects), and never came across them... and I'm quite thorough.

Yeah. Judging by where they're stored in memory (with the large and small magic refills), it certainly looks like enemies were originally supposed to drop small and large meat chunks for life refills (small would probably restore 1 heart, while large would restore several), but this was changed so that enemies only ever drop hearts and you only ever get 1 heart refilled from any defeated enemy.

I am sure they are in Ganon's Tower. In an horizontal room featuring a large pit and a bridge (so you fall if they hit you), and a secret room on the right end you can only get to by hitting yourself with a wall or something.

E: Yep, they are used just like that. Maybe somewhere else too, but I don't remember.

Okay, thanks. I had a feeling they might be used somewhere that I just wasn't remembering. That's why I asked before posting them to the wiki. The only other place that was immediately coming to mind that had vertically-rolling cannonballs was the Eastern Palace, but they come out of a hole in the wall there.

Funny thing is, they're really just exactly the same sprites as the vertical versions, just flipped 90 degrees.

Sounds like you're implying they're unnecessary. However, the GB/C can only do x-, y- and xy-flips. 90° rotations are neither of those.

This is the SNES version. Generally, though, I've noticed that sprites are only ever flipped horizontally in ALttP. If there needs to be a horizontally-facing version of a vertically-facing object, or vice versa, there will be separate sprites for it.

Man, Gradius 3 is uneventful as far as unused stuff goes. Played through almost the whole game and found nothing. =(

SNES is the same way; tiles can't be rotated, just flipped (though you can simulate 180° rotation by flipping X and Y).

Better than the Master System/Game Gear, which couldn't flip sprites at all!

And yet, people still claim the SMS was vastly superior to the NES...

On Ninja Gaiden 2's unused song,

"(Category. (Should be replaced with an OGG of just the unused song eventually, though.))"

I have an mp3 of it here. If someone wants to snag it and convert it, that would probably make that task a lot easier.

Although my computer (or Winamp, more or less) spontaneously decided it could now play ogg's after years of me fighting with it and getting no results, I still have no means of converting to ogg.
