Here comes the blasting.

Liberals outnumbered 2 to 1 on the poll against conservatism. Democrats holding Liberal and Moderate views maintained while Conservative views were up slightly. Republicans were at 72% for conservative values (surprise) versus 24% moderate, 3% liberal. Independents maintained their conservative spike from last year as moderate percentage declined and liberal views went up slightly.

So it seems, going by those numbers, conservatism is still the popular political thought process from last year and is even on the rise with moderate and liberal political thought process being on the decline.

Thoughts?

Any information on what is considered 'conservatism' in this poll? What's considered conservative has been moving to the left for decades (ie, a liberal in the 1970s could be a conservative now, a conservative back then could be considered radical now) Moreover, I can't find whether this relates to social conservatism or fiscal conservatism (most likely the latter due to the recent economic crisis) ...

It claims a record-high in conservatism since 1992, but it's quite possible that most liberals back then are in fact more conservative than conservatives today.

They should measure these things with specific questions over particular beliefs and not let people just say conservative/liberal/moderate.

I believe the poll pretty much asks for a generalization. Most polls are. And you're right, it'd probably be different if it was based on specific issues in political thoughts more than anything else. About as general as saying 'are you a republican, independent, or democrat' in your political beliefs.

I don't think it goes as far off as 'liberals being more conservative then than those that call themselves conservative' now, though. This is just an estimate of beliefs likely fueled by media in one facet or another and compounded socially.

Yeah, I heard about that a while back. It's rather depressing for someone as ultra-liberal as myself.

Although yeah, because it's based on self-identification it's not necessarily reflective of people's actual political views over time

I would suspect this has more to do with herp derp teaparty raeg, but your milage may vary I suppose.

I think it's also important to note that if this number were accurate it would still be a fairly interesting point that it didn't stop a landslide victory two years ago, so don't count on numbers alone.

(Though admittedly stupid people are immensely powerful in large groups)
