Thank you for translating. It's nice to get that suspicion confirmed.
Can I mention it on the game article, though? Not sure if TCRF covers stuff like outright scrapped ideas.

Prerelease covers that I'd say

Alright. Will a section on the main page work? I don't think there's quite enough to justify a whole page.

The question they were asked was
――ゲストキャラクターが戦闘に参加してくれるのも、DS版の新要素ですよね。会話によるヒントだけでなく、戦闘でもサポートさせようとした意図というのは?

Interviewer: One new feature of the DS version is that guest characters can appear in battle scenes. This means they'll actually be helping out in battle, rather than just giving hints and exposition, right?

Asano: At first, we were considering having a fifth party slot.

Tanaka: Because we were remaking the graphics and the encounter balance from scratch anyway, a fifth character wouldn't have been difficult to add. But since you so rarely have a guest character in the party, we didn't want to have to reserve processing power and the like for them. We decided to stick with the main four characters so as not to strain the DS's capabilities and have the guest characters only assist occasionally.

so yes, you're exactly right lol
It's also worth noting this was Square's first DS game so they didn't know how far they could push it yet. 4's remake has a 5-person party and also more than just 3 monster slots.

Me again. I found an interview for the FFIII remake (http://dengekionline.com/soft/interview/ff3/) but the thing that really interests me is this part:

浅野:じつは、最初は5人パーティにしようと考えていたんですよ。
田中:グラフィックや戦闘バランスなどを1から直しているので、5人パーティにするのは難しくなかった。ただ、たまにしかいない5人目のキャラのために、スペックを割くよりかは、普段の4人でDSのスペックを使い切った方がベストだと考えて、飛び入りというスタイルにしました。

Based on the online translators I'm using, they seem to be saying that the game originally had a fifth part member slot, but they got rid of it because it would have only been used occasionally and wasn't worth sacrificing the specs for. That might also explain why Desch's sword is an actual item in the code (though that wouldn't explain the lack of Alus' boomerang, Cid's Hammer...).

Thanks for translating, a tiny fairy.

Could someone translate this extra screen (the two options at the bottom) that can be displayed if one of the Submenu 1-Xs are displayed in e-Reader mode?

I'd render this as, "Gumbious Temple, in which you now stand, is adorned by the holy flame of the Eclipse Torch. It is the center of not only the Dezolian faith, but also its government."

頂く in this case likely means something like "is crowned by" or "is adorned by". I've seen it used in contexts like 雪を頂く, meaning "snow-capped", and I'm pretty sure this is how it's being used here.

Here's another possible rendering:

"Gumbious Temple, in which you now stand, is graced by the holy flame of the Eclipse Torch. It is the center of not only the Dezolian faith, but also its government."

頂く basically means "be privileged to have or receive". In religious terms, one might say "graced by the presence of". I shortened it to "graced by" to reduce the number of "of"s in the sentence. :-)

I have another troublesome bit of dialogue here:

In the May prototype, this guy's line is: "Here at Gumbious Temple, we not only guarded the 'Eclipse Torch,' the object of the Dezolisian belief, but also we are the core of the governmental system."

Is this accurate? I'm worried there may be some subject confusion going on here.

EDIT: Another line from later in the game: "わしは、二千年の時を生きる ガンビアス大寺院の大僧正…。" Is this saying that the bishop / high priest has lived for 2000 years, or that the Gumbious Temple had stood for 2000 years?

I'd put this as, "I am the high priest of Gumbious Temple who shall live through the second millennium..."

This line is from Raja, if I'm not mistaken. I don't think he's implying that he's 2000 years old, but rather that he will be the one to oversee the events that occur at the 2000 year mark since Dark Force was first defeated.

It seems missing "聖なる炎"(Holy Fire).

I think this translation: ( I am not English speeker, so This is need check readproof. )
Here at Gumbious Temple, we not only serve holy fire 'Eclipse Torch', the object of the Dezolisian belief, but also we are the core of the governmental system.

This is "High priest has lived for 2000 years".

Cool, thank you very much!

I figured out that this will randomly play if you leave the game sitting for long enough, so I guess it is more of an easter egg.

Dunno if this is a stupid request or not, since the thread is explicitly for text, but: I found what seems to be a hidden audio message from the developers in Big Ol' Bass 2, but I can only understand enough Japanese to catch a few words. Could a competent speaker weigh in and/or transcribe, please? Or tell me this is the wrong thread maybe.

You're close. Chaz's line is more like, "No way... Lyla was... inside Elsydeon." As in, her soul is contained inside the sword, just like the other heroes of the past.

Also, I think it's more proper to just call the sword Elsydeon (no "the") in the script, since AFAIK other named/legendary swords never use "the". We don't say "The Excalibur", "The Narsil", or "The Sting", for instance.

Thank you!
